Dubai came in at number 10 in a list of the world’s best places to travel for holiday, according to a list by US News and World Report.
The list was put together using expert opinions, reader votes and travel trends.
The Gulf city’s skyscrapers and contrasting desert land were compared to those of Las Vegas, to where tourists flock around the year.
“People from all over the world flock to these shimmering oases with the same goal: to play hard. But as a vacation spot, Dubai easily trumps ol' Sin City thanks to its gorgeous cream-coloured [Arabian] Gulf shoreline, international culinary scene and larger-than-life attractions,” according the list.
Dubai’s major cosmopolitan attractions listed include the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Dubai Marina and Palm Jumeirah.
However, the city was also referred to as an “old port town” thanks to its traditional wooden abras floating on Dubai Creek, its gold and spice souks and its natural Jumeirah beaches.
“Despite constantly looking to the future, this city isn't quick to let go of its past. It's this dynamic that not only put Dubai on the tourist map but will also keep it there,” said the list.
Other cities on the list include Rome and Sydney, which came in at number one and two respectively. Porto in Portugal came in at number three for its rich history, abundant architecture and beach shores.
London, Paris, New York, Florence, Prague and Barcelona followed suit. Other entries on the list include Italy’s Amalfi Coast and Greece’s Santorini.
