Dubai residents living in areas including Jumeirah Lakes Towers and Palm Jumeirah will face fines of AED500 from March for drying clothes or hosting barbeques on their balconies, Emirates 24/7 has reported.

Rules restricting the use of outdoor areas in several residential communities were issued in November by Trakhees, the organisational arm of Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC), in a bid to maintain the aesthetic appearance of Dubai.

The authority said it will now issue penalties to those who break the rules, having already launched a community awareness campaign educating residents on the new regulations last year.

“We will end our awareness campaign by end-February and start issuing fines to those not obeying the law from March,” a company spokesman told the Dubai-based daily.

As part of the campaign, Trakhees also ordered residents not to install satellite dishes on the facades of buildings or use balconies as places of storage, issuing brochures to residents in Arabic, English, Hindi, Urdu and Chinese.

The rules applied to all of its supervised residential communities, such as International City, Jebel Ali Downtown and Discovery Gardens.

This is an alien culture that must be abolished once and for all. It is ugly and an offence to one's eyes. The higher the fine the better, this is how these people will learn.

What is wrong with Karama? Though I dont live there...it seems like an agreeable place. They have nicer and more sensible landlords.

People, quit the nagging. I live in Sharjah and I'm drying clothes indoors. It's no big deal.

No BBQ on balcony's, well maybe there should be a facility to BBQ and host guests on the beach .....oh I forgot we don't have access anymore! As for drying clothes on the balcony, I appreciate not hanging them over the balcony ballastrade as it simply looks tacky and runs the risk of distributing clothes on other peoples balconies. But banning the use of a clothes horse on your balcony is simply rediculous!!! We pay housing fee's based on a square footage of our apartment, including the area of the balcony, therefore is part of our private home, therefore our decision what we do with it as long it does not effcet our neighbours! The next notice is going to charge us 25 AED for use of sunbeds on our balconies!

Well said Spinola!
I have been living in Dubai for well over 30 years, drying my clothes in my balcony and have till date not been diagnosed with any serious health problems except perhaps the occasional common cold! Wow! I would imagine half the population of my hometown Mumbai would have been dead by now with the amount of pollution there & everyone hanging their laundry outside!!

Why do people want to stare at others washing in the first place..?? Surely there must be better things to look at or do..??
