Dubai Sports City plans Mall of the Emirates-sized retail hub

The designs for a new mall - to be about the same size as Mall of the Emirates - at the $4bn Dubai Sports City development have been finalised, according to a senior official.

Dubai Sports City finance head Vijay Sajjanhar said the work on the Arena Mall had been carried out by a US-based firm working in conjunction with a local entity.

The mall is on the future agenda of Dubai Sports City.

“The mall is around the same size as the Mall of the Emirates [in Dubai], around 1.4 million sq ft of leasable space,” said Sajjanhur. “The mall has been configured in a way so people come to the events via the building.”

Approximately 1.4 million sq ft of gross leasable area, the mall will be anchored by a 140,000 sq ft hypermarket, an interactive and educational family entertainment centre, cinemaplex, two food courts and an array of over 300 fashion, convenience, family and leisure destination stores and over 7,000 covered car parks.

Earlier this week, Sajjanhar said Dubai Sports City is set for a major retail expansion.

He told Construction Week Online that the current focus is firmly on developing the retail side of the 50 million sq ft site in Dubailand now that the measures put in place to ensure delivery of residential plots in the wake of the 2008 global financial crisis have worked.

This has led to a concerted push to develop the conjoined Canal Promenade and Canal Residence West located on the east side of DSC.
