Etisalat, the Abu Dhabi-based telecommunications giant, has extended its October 16 deadline for customers to re-register their mobile SIM cards, but did not rule out disconnecting unregistered SIMs at a future date.
As part of the ‘My Number, My Identity’ campaign established by the UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), part of a clamp down on illegal SIM cards and phones, customers had until October 16 to register their SIMs at an Etisalat outlet.
Etisalat officials at the GITEX Technology Week exhibition told reporters the October 16 deadline set for customers to re-register or face having their services disconnected had now been extended. Officials did not issue a new date for when services would be cut.
Users can register their SIM cards by taking their passport or national ID to du or Etisalat registration points from July 17, the TRA said in a statement on July 5.
“Mobile phone subscribers are expected to fully update their data and ensure that the SIM cards they’re using are registered under their names,” authorities said.
Operator Etisalat has 105 registration points across the UAE while du has 46, said the TRA.
“[Re-registration] prevents any unauthorised or criminal usage of sim cards and helps in curbing legal or social violations besides reducing frauds that have been noticed during the last few years,” the TRA said.
