Event Description

Surfacing is an exhibition of new works by the London based artist Angela Eames who was shortlisted for the Sovereign European Art Prize 2007.

The works in this exhibition question our understanding of the real and the virtual. In the presentation of physical works, canvasses, Eames uses patterning in the drawing of large-scale images which are visibly influenced by Islamic tile design. The works take as a premise the notion of front and behind, drawing what is there and what is not there. They play with our perception, presenting veils of visual information on the canvas, whether they are referencing geometry, natural form or man-made objects.

The show will be a fantastic opportunity to experience works by the British artist who uses both the computing environment and traditional drawing knowledge and methods. Eames will also be installing a work which has stemmed directly from the Total Arts gallery space. Working in her studio in London, she has built a virtual three dimensional replica of the gallery space using second-hand information; floor plan and photographs sent to her. From this replica she has extracted physical images. In other words she has drawn the space.

By exploring the intermediate territory between the real and the virtual, between awareness and ignorance, between material and the ethereal, Angela Eames drawings act as mediator between two fields of human perception. They both challenge our understanding of drawing and blur the boundaries of predictable perception.

Surfacing is produced by Candlestar Ltd, the London based international cultural consultancy (www.candlestar.co.uk) in association with the Total Arts Gallery. The artist will be present at the opening of the exhibition and will give a talk on her work and approach.
