More than 1.7 million UAE residents are now a member of the social networking site Facebook, a company executive revealed on Wednesday.

“Across the MENA region, we have ten million active users from a total of 400 million subscribers worldwide,” Trevor Johnson, Facebook’s head of strategy and planning for the EMEA region, told Arabian Business.

Johnson added that the site was also popular in Saudi Arabia where there are 1.5 million subscribers. He was speaking on the sidelines of an event to mark Facebook’s new partnership with Connect Ads in Dubai on Wednesday.

The deal, signed earlier this month, means that companies wishing to advertise on the Facebook site can now buy space from a regional reseller, instead of having to purchase through companies based in Europe or Asia.
