our nation
Posted by Nasir at 17:00 UAE time
I only wish that everyone in our nation was intelligent enough to to be able to filter what they see on TV. If we were as hardworking as the Germans or Japanese we would have reached developed nation status by now. I think morals are very important alongside intelligence and hard work. We use our intelligence and hardwork just for our own benefits and never think as a nation. Musharraf might have taken us to a bigger mess now but can anyone comment who can take us out of this mess? Benazir, Nawaz Sharif, Imran may be, some mulla - who??? Might is right in case of Musharraf. Nobody elected him but he has proved to be somewhat more sincere to the nation then most others I can only think one thing which allows him stand apart - he has still not been given the charge of being corrupt by anyone yet - a big achievement in Pakistan. If he just needs to stay in power and not try to make money for himself and his family and friends he is much better than the others we have tried and tested in the last decade or so. Handling of the lal masjid, waziristan, judges and suicide attack situation has surely been very bad. As a general he has lost that war big time and just trying to save face on these issues. I feel there are outside parties and some local fools supporting these activities, a major fault lies in our people who fall for these people, primarily illiterates who get corrupted by bad media and incorrect teachings. The people talking bout freedom here would they like to talk about the rape of someone close to them on media - would they like the media to run a story every five minute on that, with picture etc., there are some cultural values which we are keeping let us value them. If our media had taken a higher ground and invited all politicians for a open debate that would have been a much better step. Maybe still they can open a debate and let people decide who has the best options. They could have asked people to come on TV and provide the solution to the issue. Not just talk bout the problem, but the solution.

Who gave Musharraf the right to ban the media and impose emergency
Posted by Ayesha at 09:00 UAE time
To all those Musharraf supporters, I have only 1 question to ask. Who gave Musharaf the right to impose emergency and ban the media.
Was he elected? Or were his forefather ruling Pakistan before he took over?
Whether the media was biased or not? Whether they were injecting propaganda into the minds of innocent, helpless Pakistanis, does not anyone realise that it is my discretion as a human being to decide what I would and would not like to watch on Television. When we see obscene scenes or comments being made dont we not change those channels.
By taking off selective channels, bullying others to sing the praises of the government and using dictatorial methods to justify an illegitimate rule is what people think justified then I really dont know much to say here.
Musharraf has been in power for the last 8 years, he selected his own parties, his own ministers. The bomb blasts and other radical situations is his fault entirely. Has anyone thought about this?
By blaming his own shortcomings on the media alone is the most cowardly thing a dictator like him can think of.

Dubai deals blow to Pakistan TV

First, we require raising a question from our compassion, “Do we need all truth to be uncovered?” Conversely, it is well again to cling to a particular truth, which will secure us from Chaos in the Civil Society? Not each optimistic term and sharpness is required to be forced on our society, particularly the “Western Terms – Freedom of Expression”. These kinds-of Western Terminologies in actual fact bring the west in the direction of a very turmoil in their societies. Now days, these freedoms of expression escort them, same sex marriages, not wearing clothes, free sexual relations without getting married, etcetera etcetera etcetera.
Currently just gaze at the concise insight of present scenario, as PEMRA which refers to, “Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority”. This authority gets set the broadcast rules, after getting signed “Code of Conduct for Media Broad Cast”, with the broadcasting channels. If certain TV channels, instituted contravening rules in the shade of “freedom of expressions” then I am with UAE and Pakistani Authorities. Did you ever noticed the talk shows, where Anchors appeared on live with anti government thoughts and remarks, support and lead antigovernment elements and tried to impose their evil judgments over the minds of innocent citizens of Pakistan. They left nothing for the native inhabitants use their own judgments. In reality Media has made us fanatic, it is more or less a franchise (Tim Horton or Mocha) outlet or, “information on the go”. Switch it on, grab the information, structure your mind, and draw to a close. We have blackout our eyes, and established perceiving from the eyeballs of Media.
Media ought to be more accountable, and proviso they need to set free the truth, then they must depict both sides of the depictions. What go off out of the blue in Pakistan, after March 2007, a Media confrontation in antagonism to General Musharraf is currently surpassing its perimeters. All shady Judges, altered Lawyers are now becoming the spotless characters, and this makes me to consider one thing that entire has lay down to overturn Musharraf regime, with the intention that a part of the objectives they achieved from Musharraf, and residual of the goals will be accomplished with Benazir Bhutto and a Battery of her ruthless Feudalist. Pointless to bring up a proclamation of steady Government akin to Iraq, where hundreds of peoples are dying on bomb blast, but for Media and for the West, they mull over the Iraqi regime is more Stable than Pakistan (Wow, this I consider a biggest Joke of this Millennium).

some facts
Posted by Nasir at 11:00 UAE time
I would like to add a few more points here so that people who have not watched these channels or could not understand the hidden intentions of these channels can appraise the situation better. I agree that on paper closing down news channels looks like a very bad thing to do.
But if anyone has seen documentaries on world war propaganda videos and Cuban crisis they would know:
Just for an example GEO was running a time bomb like clock continuously on the channel counting minutes and hours into emergency, like something really bad is about to happen. The presenters referred to time passed every hour, even every half an hour, and commented that X hours Y minutes and Z seconds have passed and they cannot understand why the people are not on the roads and why have politicians not called a strike or called people to protest till now. the message was “rise against the president”.
Worst thing was the propaganda video showing Quaid-e-Azam(the father of the nation) speaking (with dubbed voice - not his actual speech) some lines from the constitution, then comparing Musharraf with Zia -ul -Haq in pictures, then telling the people that all their rights under the constitution have been taken away and now the government can take away all their property, money and they will have no rights no recourse now, they can’t demand security, justice or anything from anyone now. This technically might be true as the constitution was put into abeyance, but everybody knows this was not Musharraf’s intensions. May be a far worse thing was done by Bhutto when in the presence of the constitution he nationalized all big industries in Pakistan in the seventies, setting back the country in a major way.
I would have really appreciated if the channels had pointed out that Benazir is being planted by the US in the Pakistani politics again and people would be stupid to elect her again or any of the already tested and proven corrupt / incapable politicians. But when I still see people following leaders like Benazir , the mullas and most Muslim league leaders, it only make my belief strong that only education makes people think properly. I know for a fact that in Pakistan the worst person with the most corrupt thinking /intensions, lowest skill and education level usually enters into politics. We have all seen in universities, that the political parties just hire the worst student mostly a bully to work for their party. The few good politicians we have are the ones who might never get a chance to rule us unless there is free and fair election and people are educated and intelligent enough to make a right decision putting the interest of the country first. People in Pakistan campaign for a candidate just because they know they will get support from the candidate for their illegal activities if he gets elected. 99% of people will vote for a thieve just because he is their relative or a friends friend and can provide them un-lawfull benefits afterwards. Character and Morals are the last thing in the mind of people when they vote, primarily because the literacy level is too low for a good democracy to prosper.
I dont remember anything specific about ARY but they had a general disliking for this decision which was evident in their news. Being biased towards a news item is the biggest mistake a media channel could do. However they were much better than wat GEO was doing.

Freedom of information
Posted by sean at 17:00 UAE time
Dubai has a tight grip on the information reported about itself so it's no surprise that they're blocking freedom of speech regarding other countries.

Media City bows to Gen Musharraf bu Qatar did not succumb to US pressure
Posted by irfan at 20:00 UAE time
Dubai Media City attracted the media from all over the world as a place for free enterprise. The desert bloomed. Today, Dubai has lost it all by one stupid decision!
Just because a military dictator in Pakistan did not like what was being said about his hunger-to-stay-on-in-power policies, the Dubai government succumbed and ordered two Pakistani channels to close down.
The Government of Qatar now stands as a proud beacon in this region. They withstood the pressure from the US (no less) and continued to allow AlJazeera TV to give the world the truth.
If, as your reader claims, GEO and ARY News were merely injecting wrong thoughts in the minds of viewers, nobody would watch these channels. The US has tried to inject "good" thoughts by launching AlHurra - but look at how viewers rate that channel.
To believe that people in Pakistan are incapable of deciding for themselves is to mock the truth. Everyone in Pakistan can change their TV channels. They switched to GEO and ARY because they know the difference. Pakistan's state run PTV has no credibility because it reports the government version of the truth. The people of Pakistan made a conscious decision to watch these two channels - nobody forced them. And they still have their fingers on the remote and can switch to PTV if they feel. But they do not.
By taking away the truth from the people of Pakistan, the government of Dubai has done itself no good. The entire media community of Dubai should stand up as one of their own has fallen. Tomorrow it could be their turn!
PS: I do not own any media but am a newsaholic and watch and read the news and this act has denied me of my inalenable right to hear and see what I want.

good decision
Posted by Nasir at 13:00 UAE time
Without agreeing to wat Musharraf has done or is doing, i agree with the UAE govt. decision. they should not let such activities be hosted from UAE
Being a Pakistani i know wat these media people were trying to do especially GEO. They were trying to become tycoons which no government could regulate. There was so much propaganda in the news that the truth was being put in the back seat. Their presenters were calling people to react and come on the roads. A journalist has no right to tell people that they should protest against the govt. especially if people dont want to do that on their own.
Life for a common man is as usual in Pakistan. There is not much of a difference with or without the imposition of emergency for a honest person minding his own business and living his life. only politicians, lawyers and journalists who have their own vested interests are protesting. for wat just to de-stabalize the country.
these news channels had gone way overboard with their tactics of influencing people and injecting wrongs thoughts into the minds of people. i think democracy and free press is only suitable for a well educated country, and freedom of media is only relevant when it does not have a hidden agenda.
May the truth and the best interest of the country prevail.

Dubai deals blow to Pakistan TV

What a blow for the reputation of Dubai and its so-called "free media". I thought Sheikh Mohammad called the shots in this part of the world - not a power-crazed ruthless military dictator like Musharraf!
