Better call it the Horn of the Gulf..neithe here or there
Posted by kaptain at 12:57 UAE time
Better call it the horn of the Gulf and the bone of contention is not here.
There are many issues other than this..why fight over non-issues which carry no economic weightage.
Now matter what name it gets; the oil that crosses that place would still be oil with the same price. Isn't it?

Why not ...
Posted by CS at 19:57 UAE time
I suspect not many people REALLY care. Why not just call one side the Persian Gulf and the other side the Arabian Gulf. That's pretty easy... Haven't we all got bigger and more serious problems to worry about in the region? Time to grow up and move on...

Legally it is Persian Gulf.
Posted by Jason at 11:37 UAE time
In my opinion the Persian Gulf will remain just that officially, now what does the arab world want to call it just shows that they are ignoring the facts and rest of the world and particularly their regional history, and they are after creating tension with Iran.

Who cares?!?!?!
Posted by Sam at 14:44 UAE time
Iran is under sanctions and fighting practically every other country around the World and every one of its citizens who managed to flee there and is unaware of the economical woes that will create, and the Arab countries are engrossed with racking up the money from the expats before squeezing them out of here, again unaware of the economical woes that will create. It's still a gulf that will be there for the next million years and no one will "own it" based on its name.

And most people living in and around it are Arabs
Posted by Ahmed Ali at 06:52 UAE time
Most people living on Gulf islands are of Arab origin, same for many living on the Iranian shores.
And by the way, around 50% of the Persian Language is Arabic! Also, they use the Arabic letters and script! Go figure!

It's Persian Gulf
Posted by Abarmard at 20:23 UAE time
This is a British and American based policy to separate the region as they always have. The world including the rulers of the region know what the name of the water is. It's Persian Gulf. This doesn't mean that it belongs to Iran! In reality it belongs to US and UK, look at their military all around to know my point is true. Iran is not the enemy, and is not trying to take something that is not hers! It's simple, refer to any documentation, historical or modern to know that it's Persian Gulf. No politics, just reality.

Persian Gulf is the true name.
Posted by Eli at 09:41 UAE time
In Legal terms, the United Nations has twice recognized the legality of the term "Persian Gulf" (UNAD 311/March 5, 1971 and UNLA 45.8.2 © on August 10, 1984). It is significant that all Arab countries have signed the UN documents. For further information consult the following links:

If the arab gulf states insist on calling it other name it just shows that they are trying to fake the history! is this what is all about? whay can't the arab states just accept the historical and legal facts of the ture name for this part of the world.

interesting article.. bad reporting style
Posted by Zain at 02:53 UAE time
It's reporting style like this - labeling people as Shia's/Sunnis that causes more problems.. please Mr bowman.. your articles tend to be more news worthy than this, you should know better than that living in the Gulf surrounded by Muslims.. also it would be fair to give some unbiased backing for why the contention is there over the Gulf's name aside from your religious labeling, such as a reference to the name of the Gulf and its historical derivation.
