Irony
Posted by Paul at 13:17 UAE time
"What do muslims have, the ire of a number of people for the crimes committed by a few. Is this justified?"
What do Danes have, the ire of a number of people for the crimes committed by a few. Is this justified?
Incidentally, who specifically has been killed by non-Jews on behalf of Jews for denying the Holocaust? As far as I'm aware, no legal or government group has executed anyone specifically for denying the Holocaust. I would very much love to hear about these people because if they have been acting in my name, I am absolutely horrified and would want to bring such organisations to account.

Freedom of speech!!
Posted by Ahmad at 20:54 UAE time
A very interesting essay by E R Braithwaithe has a line on freedom- “your freedom ends where my nose begins!!”
The idea is to treat others with a little dignity and respect, that is all that is asked for here. To keep publishing these cartoons again and again is rubbing salt in the wounds inflicted by you.
I, for one, treat these cartoons as a rambling of the rabble who are totally insecure with the growth of Islam in the world and worthy of our utter contempt. Violent reaction is stupid, just shows us in bad light.
More poor fools they, as like Bush, they don’t realize, that these acts of theirs strengthen the hands of the extremists who go, ‘See, told you so, they have utter contempt for us and our beliefs.’
And as for denying the holucast, it’s the most infernally horrible irony. And is in no way relevant. Thse who perpetrated it are remembering it with all solemnity!! I do hope denying the Holucast being perpetrated by Israel also attracted a similar penalty.
As regards tolerance, the west has no religious leaning anymore, just materialistic bias, so they will never understand the Islamic faith and the deep hurt these caricatures have caused.
What if any, is the reason for this, I fail to understand; current event cartoons are on relevant current day stories or scandals, perfectly understandable. Why the prophet, I fail to understand this, except
1. either as a manifestation of deep set inadequacies and inferiority complexes or
2. they were paid off by the ‘us or them’ type of extremists.
Whatever be the rationale, I find a Danish product, I’m not buying!!
Freedom of speech is all fine, but the only language they understand is money!! So pardon me for not subscribing to the freedom of speech doctrine that does not give me the freedom to dislike the Danes and not buy what they have the temerity to come peddling to us. So ladies and gentlemen:
1. Let their big ECCO shoes pinch a little !!
2. Let the DANSK cookies crumble a bit!!
3. Let the LURPACK butter melt a bit!!
4. Let the EMBORG FROZENS melt a little bit!!
5. Let the LEGO structures fall a bit!!
6. Let the ID Design furniture rot a a bit!!
7. Let the ROSENBORG Cheeses spoil a bit!!!

Paul, you are right that there is no Jew who tries to kill someone for the denial of the Holocaust, because, they have someone else to do it for them.
What do muslims have, the ire of a number of people for the crimes committed by a few. Is this justified?

Let's not get confused here
Posted by Paul at 15:37 UAE time
By all means, boycott Danish products if you think the Danish government is responsible for the printing of the cartoons, as opposed to a group of private individuals who are simply legally allowed to publish them. Given that Denmark's principle exports are bacon and Carlsberg, I can't really see a boycott doing much damage.
As for the freedom of speech issue...let's not get confused here. It's only in a select group of European countries where it's illegal to deny the Holocaust. Those countries are wrong for having such laws. But in many Western countries, it is perfectly legal to deny the Holocaust. Indeed, there are several people in the West who have made tidy profits doing so, through having their books published. Yes, that's right. In several European countries, it is legal to publish entire BOOKS denying the Holocaust, which seems to take freedom of speech even further that drawing one cartoon.
Here's the other thing. As far as I'm aware, no Jew has ever tried to murder a Holocaust revisionist. Or his publisher. THAT'S the crucial difference.
It is perfectly legal to deny the Holocaust in the West. But much like the printing of the cartoons, while it may be legal to do so, it probably isn't prudent or sensible to do so.
But it's both illegal and imprudent to threaten to kill people for their beliefs, don't you think? I'm not aware of any Muslim in the West being killed specifically for their beliefs. I'm aware of many non-Muslims being killed by 'Muslims' in the West though, and maybe the good, decent followers of Islam would do better to condemn those who truly insult the good name of their faith - those who commit terrible acts such as flying planes into towers or detonating bombs on trains, all in the name of Islam.
Those people are the real insult to faith.

Freedom of speech, eh?
Posted by Tahloube at 14:13 UAE time
As Sal puts it: What happened to feedom of speech when it comes to holocaust revision or any so-called anti-semite subject?!
The Danish newspaper claims right to publish the offensive cartoons. Muslims have right to boycott.

Boycottig peacefully should be acceptable
Posted by Taher Moinuddin at 12:08 UAE time
Ahmed,
From your writing it is clear that not only are you a biased Muslim but a Muslim who is far away from the truth that is. You are trying to find blemish in the personality whose name you carry (or did you adapt this name to create confusion).
Like you have said a Christian name does not imply that the person is Christian and likewise with you.
The way you have written it is clear that you may not be a Muslim by birth or by choice. You are one of those persons who have been led astray from the birth onwards towards bowing down before those Sufis and Dargahs where ever you come from. Such people are so drawn away from Sunnah that they could be as opposite as the poles. You do not realize the love the Muslim Ummah has for the prophet, (no one who is without compassion can) because it is this love that propels every Muslim to speak out against those who speak against the prophet.
Basically, it is not your fault but the upbringing that you had. If, you really love your parents and someone comes along and starts slinging bad words at them , will you still chant your Tolerance theme. You will not. You will definitely hit back with words.
Yet, it is wrong for some people to have rammed the towers, as wrong is the intolerance which resulted in deaths of thousands of innocents during and after that. Every retaliation has some winners and some losers. The winners are a few. There is no such thing as a Win-Win Situation. We have umpteen examples in history. Take Hiroshima Nagasaki for example, Vietnam, Iran –Iraq war, Iraqi invasion to name a few.
Thank you for your words Ahmed because the likes of you make us feel that there are people knowing half truth and these are the ones who think they know all.
Mahatma Gandhi drove away the British by using peaceful means, and boycotting their products, meetings etc was the right way and this is lauded even till now. So Why not allow these people to use this peaceful tool in this age?
You are voicing your opinion to prevent those boycotting (although peacefully) Danish products from doing so, why don’t you use the same argument to stop those who are playing with the sentiments of 1.5 Billion people.

Cartoon
Posted by Sal at 11:19 UAE time
I don't see any reason to protest against the cartoon even though it was deliberate and wrong to make world’s largest group of believers upset. Worse when they repeated it!
I do not understand one thing about the hypocrisy of freedom of speech, when it comes to holocaust denial, or Nazi support, where is this so called 'freedom'?

Tolerance vs Resistance
Posted by Ahmed at 11:59 UAE time
Tolerance will ensure that humanity survives while Resistance (as you've implied it) will continue only till the final human survives and the world will be a lonely place. I am sure that the Creator would prefer his creation to survive rather than self-destruct.
Your line of discussion seemed directed under the assumption that the people publishing the cartoons were anti-islam and a further ghastly assumption that they were Christian. A Christian name does not imply a christian... they could be atheists! Not just anti-islam but anti-religion. Or not anti-religion alone but possibly anti-conformist, communists, socialists, etc.
I am Ahmed, Muslim by birth but no more by choice. I do not agree with all the tenets of Islam and I do not retain my childhood impressions of our prophet anymore after I read the Hadis and his works mentioned there.
I do not agree that the sword and martial might are implements of legitimate intellectual persuasion. I do not espouse the concept Jihad as I believe the Creator is also the only legitimate destroyer. One cannot take what one has not given... one cannot end what one has not started, life and death are the works of the Creator and just as giving life is not in the capacity of man... so should meting out death not be.
Is your understanding of Allah as being a force so powerless that he needs humans to exact his judgment on sinners? Can he who created all not have the power to remove what he doesn't like?
So a person who says something which does not cause physical harm to anyone... is like a stray barking dog on the streets below. You have one of 2 options... either ignore it as a stupid ignorant dog or secondly...go back and bark at it.... then run after it....beat it... and then kill it. The sensible approach would be to ignore it.
If you are a sensible man and I call you stupid you do not become stupid because I called you that. As a sensible man you will discount and disarm me with a compassionate smile.
I have never found this sort of compassion work anywhere in Islam except in the thoughts and writings of Sufis who are on the exact opposite side of the Wahabis. And I never could see it in any of my readings of the Prohet Mohammed.
Between perfect sanity and total insanity there are several levels. Some people behave characteristically mad as we normally expect... some are imbeciles... some are obsessive people... some are simply lost to the world... some are autistic... some dysfunctional....some are stressed... some over stressed... although all of these may appear perfectly normal. Believe it... that Allah created them this way. What these people need is space to BE.
Space to just be. Space to make mistakes. Space to be tolerated. Space to be treated by anyone who is Rehman ur Rahim!!
The world would be a better place if we just ensured that we take responsibility for ourselves, our own conduct, speech and action. if we could love without lust, greed or expectation.
There are several people around the world who gain a high from stroking controversies, from bending rules, from going against a system, defy their parents, quit school, run havoc in the workplace, etc. This is not just a Dane and Dutch Phenomenon. Why generalize and accuse all?
Some people in your definition of resistance sent 2 planes into 2 towers. Then more people who resisted descended and the effects continue to this moment and will for more time to come.

Danish Boycott
Posted by wyoming at 02:38 UAE time
So enough talking about it, go ahead and boycott Danish products. And while your at it , boycott all Danish governmental services as well, and begin moving all Islamists out of Denmark. Why would any good Moslem want to live in such a degenerate society that would insult the great prophet Mohammed.

Tolerance Vs Repetitive Offense
Posted by Muhammed Adil Shamim at 16:08 UAE time
Dear Bruno,
I like your post, however lets plz recap the whole incident, a Danish paper published the cartoons, and then other reprinted later by using the ladder of "freedom of speech".
Now here is a question that without going into much detail, if you know somehow that one of your act would cause anger and feeling of humiliation in 1.5 billion peoples, would you do that, regardless of "Freedom of Speech" right, probably a wise would rethink doing something like that even if it is true what he is saying.
However, the major problem I believe is not the first time printing, the bigger thing is being insistent on something which is completely nonsense. responsible bodies could have soften the tension by just releasing an apology statement that "we are sorry for what has happened, and it would not happen again", but on the contrary, what guys did, simple they are insistent that it is our right to practice the freedom of speech, even if it hurts 25% population o of the planet earth.( this is completely illogical).
And concerning your comments that what is the big deal, things like this always happen in today's world. I think you need to know the Muslims beliefs in depth, according to our believes, all the prophets were most peace loving souls on the face of earth, they have never done unjust( be it Ibrahim, Moses, Jesus, or Muhammed - peace be upon all of them), so once you have this much love and association with your prophet, how would you react if some one who doesn’t know Islam much, right something wrong, and then others follow him freely, without being sensible that this may disturb 25% population of the world. Wouldn’t you give a second thought about doing so, off course one wise man definitely choose NO.
let me remind you the incident of the protest about movie" the Divinci Code", if you have seen that, they just tried to say in it that Jesus Christ had the Marriage, and today one of his descendant hi living among us.( this was just the plot, even though writer didn’t proved it), guess what happens in Muslim world, for your information, all the Muslims felt bad about this false claim, and few countries did protest too(like Pakistan, India, etc). a million dollar question for you, why Muslims are so much worried about Jesus Christ, he is not our Messenger, we better be worried about our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), but no dear.
our believe says very clearly in QURAN that all of those(prophets) were true man of GOD and they did nothing wrong ever in there life, this is called love, association, affection( I don’t know why peoples like cartoonist don’t realize that), we Muslims love all the prophet to death, anybody would ever try to cause any disrespect to them for sure, we would resist( mind it I said resist).
Regards

What does Bush have to do with Denmark or the Netherlands?
Posted by Bruno Veninga at 14:58 UAE time
First off, when releasing an article about Danish cartoons and a Dutch film, how about not using an image of German Islamic protesters chanting that "Islam is not the enemy, Bush is"...
Second, how about we ask the Islamic community in the Netherlands if the Dutch film was really THAT anti-islamic... no, it was not. Was there a big outrage in the Dutch Islamic community, no... why? Because the film really wasn't against Islam as a whole, but against Extremists.
Third, anyone and everyone knows that as soon as something is made illegal, there is always a group of people that will try all the harder to get it, and to pass it along...
Fourth, how can anyone try to argue that "[the offenders] behavior violated the Universal Declaration on Human Rights"? The cartoons never said people are not allowed to be Muslim! Not allowing people to print their opinions... now THAT is a violation of basic human rights, i.e. freedom of speech.
Fifth, and final... why is this such a big deal? There are daily cartoons, comments, films, comedies, etc that make fun of most other religions or beliefs on earth... do we hear anyone from these religions crying out (for attention)?
Seriously... don't take everything so personally. Fair enough, reprinting the cartoons was a childish and irresponsible move. But is murdering a cartoonist for a lame joke really necessary?
When I was last in an exhibition about Islam and the Muslim faith, any and all images that had any of the religious deities in it, they didn't actually have a face. It was usually blank and had flames or a halo around the head. so how is it that these Cartoons can suddenly pretend to know what the Prophet (PBUH) looked like?
Let's all take a deep breath, count to ten, laugh it off, and get along!
Isn't tolerance of others one of the main teachings of Islam... nay... ALL RELIGIONS? So let's tolerate!
