What if someone passes through the Al Barsha, Al Safa and Garhoud crossing, will the fee still be four dirhams

Would Cycles be exempt or heavily charged?

Cycles are the response. People should abandon cars for once and have fresh air on cycles. No matter how long the distances but once one hits the road on twos; it would be a habit.

But spending a whopping AED 24 is nowhere near logical on every trip. That could be put to some good use.

If pedaling hurts; get a mechanic to fit some motor to it. Or better to use the scootie thing.

Comments from RTA

Mr. ArabianBusiness Editor,
Since comments and reactions by readers in this webpage are not read by RTA (i dont think they will bother either), can you liase the concerns of the road users to them?

Editors reply I am sure the RTA will be monitoring the public reaction to their latest announcement.

Regards

Salik

To my knowledge Salik is in place to encourage people to use puplic transport and leave their cars at home to relieve congestion on the main arteries.
My question is this. Is a taxi a form of public transport?
If yes then why the additional AED 4.00 on the meter when hitting the toll gates?
Surely, Dubai taxies, as a branch of the RTA should be exempt from the toll?
Just a thought...

Long term issues

As it is with so many decisions, this decision has also not been thought out through properly. The whole concept of Dubai has been built around "tax free" and high standard of living for a very low cost and very good safety levels. Taxes are going to appear in a year or so, everyone is already suffering from the ridiculous cost of living and while the safety level is there I dont think its going to be at the same level it is in the coming years.

You cannot change the whole concept of the city once prosperity has been achieved. Many people have made the emirates their home and their children have grown up here. For those children Dubai is home and not the country of their parents origin. If you make Dubai into any other European capital then Dubai is only left in a name. The whole concept and idea of Dubai is dead. after 5-10 years when they've managed to push out the lower middle class then who is going to do their jobs? Certainly not highly salary expectation Westerners. It will be very interesting to see what happens in the next 4-5 years.

Instead of using the famce of Dubai and doing very dynamic new things these silly things are being done for money money money. The money comes on its own if things are done properly in any economy. All I see is the greed to make money which is what drives economic decisions. If its not long term decision its a waste of time.

The Metro is a great thing for Dubai. But as is the cas with Dubai I'm intsrested to see what they're going to do for the huge car parking space required for people who want to use the Metro.

Salik, a nuisance

RTA claims that by introducing salik, the road congestion has been reduced by by 25 percent. But does the remaining number of vehicles disappear into thin air or does it practically clog the other parts of the city? Suggest that RTA should not give out statements like these which insults the public.

Doug is quite right how on earth are they going to determine it is the same journey. I would suggest that all would be pleased to pay the toll for an uncongested SZR and the only way to do that is to toll every entrance to the road NOT all along it. Whichever consultant or company is advising RTA should be fired immeadiately

Salik

RTA is on a money making spree. The existing Salik has not attained the desired results. Installing additional salik gates will not solve the congestion problems.

Still the issue with the congestion on the Dubai - Sharjah highway has not been resolved. When they do solve the issue - if at all - a new toll gate will be installed there too.

As it is cost of living in Dubai has escalated. Adding further expenses may not be in the best interest.

But what is the point and strategy behind destroying what was built?

If the government approach now is to push people out of the emirate and maintain a select community of locals and corporate presidents through making it expensive and unenjoyable to live in this city, it is their choice to make which will have those consequences, and it's for locals to object to if they don't like it. But the question is WHY?! What's the point of changing the 30 year old policy of welcoming foreign talent of all levels only now when it was working great, and this obviously is not working at all?

Really Guys, Why Bother Commenting, No Ones' Listening Anyways

Hey guys, the RTA needs to make money like any other government organisation to fuel the high salaries of its employees, so who else but you and me to contribute, its a penalty we have to pay for bringing in our talent and experience into this country. Well you are gonna pay this and much more in the future so there are really only two options actually, grin and bear it (in other words get your employers to pay for it and close down business a lot faster) or Quit and leave, and go elsewhere. I think they have us by the jugular on this one, and they are not gonna be loosing up anytime soon.

More lunacy

Here's some more lunacy. There's reports that say that you won't be charged on both gates if you go through Al Barsha and Al Safa, provided there is no break in your journey. The way they'll determine if there's no break in your journey is if you cover the distance within a certain time, which has yet to be predetermined.

Leaving aside that if you're travelling that way, you might need to stop to fill up your car, or quickly pop into MOE to pick up some groceries on your way home...what on earth are you supposed to do if you hit a traffic jam IN BETWEEN the gates?

Anyone who's driven down SZR at rush hour knows that there are always traffic jams at the approach to the Al Safa bridge. Doubtless, these motorists will be double charged because they've taken too long to get between gates!

Alernative travel

Short term thinking abounds by the RTA (Really Tax All). Get the Metro and Trams going first then put up the toll gates! Whats next : Fee for using airconditioning in our cars during summer ?

Any other solution?

I do not understand how the RTA comes up with such research results. With all honesty, I really think that SALIK is a great profit center. Yes it might have reduced traffic on Garhoud - however, by installing more toll gates will just cause more bottle necks and people jamming their cars to get through the "last free exits" before the toll gate.
If they had an alternative, like the monorail up and running, then I would not mind the SALIK toll "expansion". So far, it just seems that RTA wants to milk money from Dubai's residents.
