Firstly, you're flying a Boeing 777, not a Sedan car... Aircraft are built with so many automated sensors that can send fault information to the main deck... and whats that thing that does this all... i keep forgetting... oh yes, its called a 'computer'!
So if they say the captain saw smoke coming from the aircraft rear, you dont have to be literal in its meaning... rather just be happy he saved hundreds of lives!

You know we are living in the Year 2008 and soon in 2009 do you??
the B777 have a Rear view from the tail and couples of angle which can be found in the cockpit. and the cockpit have a computer which warn the captain of any failure.
TO john:
3rd Emirates are always reporting to the factory for any failure but not always they have to TELL YOU what was the problem, at least they something said about this so they will later say whatever they want to tell u.

I would like to see a comment from Emirate Airways. Is it quality of aircraft service dropping? Is it a sabotage? Is it reported to Boeing? What did Boeing say? For once, can we know anything?

Very interesting - 2 comments arise. How can the pilot see smoke from the rear - do planes now have wing mirrors and secondly why was a passenger standing as the plane taxied down the runway ?

Though your story was written well, the picture included depicts an Airbus A340, not a Boeing 777.
