Eid Al-Fitr to begin Oct 1, astronomers confirm
Posted by Irfan Als at 07:33 UAE time
what do the astronomers have to say now since their confirmation was a false one. They confirmed that Eid will be on Oct. 1st but this has proven wrong. Eid can only be known on the 29th Day. No astronomer in world can confirm anything in advance.

Moon sighting - ridiculous
Posted by Mohammed at 13:43 UAE time
It is amazing how these saudi 'scholars' see the moon when it is impossible to see it.
I can't believe that people actually believe the nonsense when it is there in there face. You people are the reason muslims are looked upon negatively.
These extremists who think it is 'haram' to use your brain are ridiculous. Clearly the moon was not seen anywhere near Saudi yet they announced it. A scholar from Lebanon (Fadhlullah) also announced Tuesday, but he uses the South America scientific possibility as justification, unlike the others who faked a literal sighting. I guess the Saudis couldn't declare Eid later than him. (we had this nonsense last year with another mythical sighting)

Moon Sighting
Posted by kamran razaq at 01:24 UAE time
Look its very simple, we use calculations if the moon is not sighted. If it has been sighted anywhere in the world, the communication links allow us to inform the world. Now what is the problem. If the moon has been sighted and confirmed than why the calculations? Have we gone totally mad? There is no logic any other way. We are not following saudi, but we are following the information in regards to the moon sighting.
We muslim's should be educated people and I can't believe a simple thing like this can divide us so apart. It simple if no moon is sighted than we use calculations. But if it has been sighted why the need for Calculations? It does not matter where it has been sighted, there is only one new moon. It doesn't come again the next day from start, its a day old. Come on get with it.
Salam. Sorry for putting the facts to you, but its true.

Re: Moon sighting- and Fatwa -- creating problem for Muslims
Posted by Tariq at 22:29 UAE time
Dear Mr Kashif,
Yes, prayer times are calculated everywhere. But even for prayers, the actual reliance will be on sighting and NOT on calculated tables. For eg, if my prayer time says sunrise is at 5:55AM and at 5:50AM I can SEE with my eyes that the sun has risen, then Fajr time has ended, regardless of what my prayer time calculation says. So calculations are useful as an ESTIMATE, but DO NOT override the actual sighting. This is why the ulama oppose calculation based Eid's/other ibaadaat.
The other issue is that while the sun's movement can be predicted very accurately, predicting the hilaal (new moon) sighting with 100% accuracy is impossible. Since actual sighting depends on a lot of factors like atmospheric conditions, weather, clouds etc. So Islamic scholar are not out of step, it is the muslim LAYMEN who are out of step with science. May Allah (SWT) guide us all.

Eid and moon sightening
Posted by Ahmad at 19:27 UAE time
Using telescope is not prohibited i think but by just declaring end of ramazan on the basis of creation of moon is higly un islamic . This time again Saudi Government announced the moon sighting on the day when even the moon was not on its horizon .That means we are neither using scientific data nor following the Sunnah of profit who said "see the moon and then enjoy eid" and if there are clouds then have another roza .

decision of 1st day of a month in hijra calender
Posted by mohammedali at 16:10 UAE time
Ofcourse the first day shud b decided by actual sighting. But if the crescent sighting is impossible by Astronomical scintific calculations at a perticular location/region then the scientific view shud b given priority n any sighting report shud b discarded. In our Ummah v hv both scientists n Ulemahs ,so why they dont coordinate with each other n guide Ummah righteously.May Allah (SWT)help us to follow the right path.Amen

Islam promotes sceintific intelligence
Posted by rasha at 12:34 UAE time
There's no rule in the Quran that prohibits the use of telescopes, on the contrary, Islam encourages muslims to be developed scientifically, financially and ethically.
The fact that the telescope was not been mentioned in the Quran or was not used by the prophet because it was not even invented, doesnt mean that it should not be used in the 21st Century.
Cars were not mentioned in the Quran, only animals were mentioned as a means of transportation however the use of cars is permissible in daily life and even in going to the mosque. Islam is a common sense religion.

UAE pandering KSA
Posted by IncidentFlux at 10:51 UAE time
Once again the UAE govt. is pandering to KSA's political and power trip whims! Islamic calendar follows local moon sightings. Not some regional political behemoth.
Eid should've fallen on the first of October in UAE. Making people lose their crucial last day of fast is Haram and this massive sin falls on the shoulders of the UAE govt.!

Moon Sighting and Fatwa
Posted by salman nizami at 08:31 UAE time
The daily 5 time prayer is based on scientific research no doubt, but the timings are not of those of KSA's...the timings are based on our respective locations..we do not follow saudi times if we are not "physically" present in saudi, so why and how do u u expect us to follow saudi's crescent declaration?
May Allah give us proper guidance and the wisdom to be able to differentiate right from wrong...Ameen!

Eid-ul-Fitr Moon-sighting 2008
Posted by Adil at 04:23 UAE time
Why is it so difficult for the Muslim Ummah to go back to basics of Quran and Hadith and follow the process of moon sighting as our beloved Prophet (SA) used to do.
We must not abolish the Sunnah of the prophet (SA). Science and technology processes are there to get help but if we start relying on them then we will abolish the Sunnah of Prophet (SA).
So in my opinion let the Ulema of Islam decide and come to a conclusion instead of scientists who are trying to abolish the Sunnah and use their way of moon-sighting.

Moon sighting- and Fatwa -- creating problem for Muslims
Posted by Kashif Bin Muhammad at 17:17 UAE time
I am unable to understan that if all Ulma/scholars can use watch for all year 5 time daily prayer then what the problem of using scientific calculaton in observing moon.
Infact daily prayer time table is based on the scientific calculation.
No one actually obsering the sun rise and sunset. Sumilarly, even the cresent decleration by KSA is mostly based on their Um-al qarah calender, a scientific calculation. So whats the point. We are using science but no accepting it or declaring it.
May Alllah bless our Umma- Amen

NEW FITNA on Moon Sighting created by Muslims
Posted by syed at 05:14 UAE time
Fatwa quote; "It is permissible to use telescopes etc. to sight the moon, but it is not permissible to rely on astronomical data to confirm the beginning or end of the blessed month of Ramadaan, because Allaah has not prescribed that for us in His Book or in the Sunnah of His Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).
