metro effect minimal
Posted by nasir at 18:45 UAE time
Without proper parking at each station, metro would have minimal effect on the traffic situation.
the weather in dubai does not permitt you to walk to the station or go to your office from the station unless it is less than 5-10 min walk. anything above 10 mins is to much to handle for most people.
there cant be air conditioned walk ways to every office building or from your home to the station. the best option is having large parking space at each station, at least this way one side of the walk to your destination can be avoided and would encourage more people to shift towards metro.

to all the doubting Thomases.... go home. The RTA is trying its best.. And to those who would not like to pay for ANY civic amenities... would you rather pay a 30% income tax... come on guys-- don't criticise everything in this city.

Air conditioned?
Posted by Concerned at 13:48 UAE time
All this will do is add more CO2 to the atmosphere by having a record number of ACs cooling the walkways while warming up the whole world. Imagine what would happen, if a few ACs malfunctioned and did not provide adequate cooling. People could suffocate & lose health instead of gaining it. Plus the cost of maintenance of such a structure could be massive. Purpose defeated.
Instead, they could grow adequate number of plants on either sides of these walkways and design it as a 'green' structure. This way we can have the largest green house structure in the world... & they will not have to invite public to name it, we already know what we can call it ;)

in theory this sounds likes a fantastic idea. unfortunately, experience in dubai dictates that it could very well be a flop like so many other seemingly good ideas. i suppose only time will tell ...

Pedestrian Walkways are an Excellent Initiative

In Calgary Canada almost all the buidings downtown are linked by 2nd floor walkways above the streets. So one can walk from one end of downtown to the other inside and avoid the traffic and adverse weather. So once you are downtown, there is no need to drive from one builidng to the other, you just walk. And lunchtime the walkways are full of people having a 30-40 minute walk to get out of the office and have a bit of exercise.
I really miss this in Qatar. I am working in West Bay and I have to get in my car and drive even if I want to simply get a sandwich or something to drink for lunch. And nobody leaves their office for a bit of fresh air or a walk to stretch the legs. It's the most un-inspiring place I have ever worked.

airconditioned walkways

Good idea indeed. Hope RTA will also look at option of bicycles using those walkways, and having bicycle parkings and bicycle rent out at metro stations.

Good idea but
Posted by Doug at 14:19 UAE time
It's a good idea, but isn't anyone slightly concerned that the ROADS and Transport Authority is putting forward 'don't use the roads' as a solution to the congestion issue? Especially since this is coming on the back of the previous advice of 'everyone should go to work at different times' and 'park further away and then get a taxi to your destination'.
Talk about throwing your hands up in the air and admitting you can't solve the problem.

airconditioned walkways

This is a brilliant idea. We live in the Mankhool area and it is densely built with Spinneys at two ends of the area and numerous hotel apartments and hotels within. We have two metro stations coming up and many of us would like to use an aircondtioned walkway during summer to get about and later to get to the metro stations. I am sure that many people are NOT averse to walking. They just get defeated by the weather here for 6 months of the year..... come on come on... This is the best idea that has come forth in many a years and is worth puting in practice.. please
