'Atlantis goddess' role??
Posted by ABUSIDRA at 09:04 UAE time
Bollywood star chosen for 'Atlantis Goddess' role? Are we really living in an Islamic state? Then why it's allowed for big projects, news papers etc to name whatever they want? A human being crowned a Goddess (with capital G) by human beings! So hurting and such a shame, when one knows Islam stands for strict monotheism.

lets be clear
Posted by Roche at 20:04 UAE time
If given a choice I am pretty sure both you and I will still chose to live in Dubai eventhough Dubai is pretending to be immune and others are flaunting thier incapabilities to survive the crunch.
May be it is bcoz , deep inside we belive all this crazy things will get dubai back on track much before anyother place in the world. But yes I REST MY ARGUMENT. if you chose to live back in your country.
I perhaps was the biggest critic for what Dubai has been doing all these years, and there have been lot more events like this in the past (even during gulf war) which made me belive these guyz are nuts. they have proved me and everyone else wrong before,, and i am sure they will again.
we cannot discuss UAE as we discuss any other country in the world, as it is not ruled by diplomats, economist, beurocrats or politicians, BUT COMPLETE BUSINESS MEN.

Missing the point
Posted by Karl at 22:09 UAE time
Dubai needs, and I mean NEEDS a big shot of reality (not realty) here. It cannot continue to think that it has a right to be immune to any economic issue and it cannot and should not be so irresponsible with what it has (or has not) got. Sure, be proud of your country, but only if you know 100 percent what the issues are.
My home country is all doom and gloom and it does bring the country down, I agree. But, isn't it worse to be flag-waving when you have not got the full picture? Is it not better for your leaders to be open and honest about things? Sure, Dubai has had good times, but please let us not kid ourselves into believing that they are still right here, right now. There is optimism and there is false hope. Let us have more of the former and less of the latter.
Anything else is just deception. Good luck folks...

OOhhh Cummon Guyzz...!!!
Posted by Roche at 15:12 UAE time
Guyz.. leave Saeed Alone.. He is just proud of his country. We all have our share of poor people and conditions in our countries which doesnt mean that we also have to stop doing things the way it should. Dubai became what it is .. by doing stuff like these over the years, and it has been successful in doing so. And i guarantee events like this will sure promote the country and its economy which will inturn increase its involvement in charity activites around the world.
we are all going thru this crunch.. but lets not bring out our frustration on Saeed or Atlantis.

What a waste of money
Posted by nadia Ahmad at 15:50 UAE time
What a waste of money!! Saeed you should be proud of Dubai's charity initiatives and not for this waste of money. How many hungry people could we feed with $40 million? Sad!!

Glamorous Project??
Posted by Jane Doe at 14:14 UAE time
Saeed, Please tell us why the Grade-A stars, who had to be paid to attend this tackiest of all tacky parties, would prefer to come to Dubai more and more in the future. What in the world is there on offer here? Malls, malls, cranes, dust and more (empty) malls! Do you seriously think that these kind of people want to go to Malls in Dubai to do their shopping?
The return of the boom in the real estate market will only happen when the developers grow up and make prices realistic rather than keep dreaming on how to turn out cheaply made houses for millions of dhs.

Disgusted
Posted by JGS at 12:40 UAE time
I find it difficult to comprehend the idea of spending 40M USD for celebrities who can afford to throw or pay for their own parties while there are children starving all over the world. Wouldn't it have been a great idea for Atlantis to set an example, hold the party, charge the celebrities for the pleasure of attending and then donateg the proceeds to those who desperately need it all over the world? Then I would have had much greater respect for the whole enterprise and it could have brought them much more meaningful exposure...

This makes me sick!

Oh how grand and fantastic! Really Saeed do you understand what the consequences of this 'glamorous' event is?! I'm guessing Arabian Business will report a week later how many people were fired from the Atlantis because of the Fincial Crisis! The money that is being wasted on celebs and all wanna be celebs could have saved more people jobs! There is nothing glamorous about an event which causes more harm than good!

Waste of money

Saeed, please have a think. If you cannot think of a better way to utilise (waste) $40m, then please do not inflict your tenuously linked real estate paranoia on the rest of us. Believe me, there are worthy causes out there deserving of much needed cash. This is not one of them.

(hmm... wonder how much help 40 million can give in saving and improving the life of people suffering and dying elsewhere?)

Sammy lives?
Posted by essdee at 08:24 UAE time
Been out of the loop but Gulf News has gone dead silent on Free Sammy the Shark campaign. That in itself is not surprising, don't bite the hand that feeds you advertising dirhams. The only reason that would explain silence on the part of the readership would be the global economic meltdown - who has time to think of an unlucky mute sea animal anyway? Right?
But to all the people who posted proud pictures of themselves sporting the Free Sammy sticker... where are you now? I know where Sammy is.

Saeed, these celebs are being paid to attend!!!! And to be honest, I think it is a bit crass to be holding such an event in these economic times, I am sure the people that have just lost their jobs would probably agree!

Glamorous Project
Posted by Saeed Ali at 13:24 UAE time
I am proud that Dubai is hosting such a glamorous project in a time of economic problems throughout the world; Now Grade-A stars will prefer to come to Dubai more and more rather than stay in their countries with stagnating economies.
Hopefully, this is a sign of good times to come and maybe we will see a return of the boom in the real estate market.

When the hell is this thing, you've not once mentioned a date.
Editor's note: In the second paragraph it says Thursday night.
