Education

I agree with this article, especially the observation that it is the educational system which plays a large part in the problem. The system is set up to teach groups rather than individuals and is unable to recognise and respond to a person's strengths and weaknesses. Materialism is fuelled by corporate advertisements, a strong voice is required to speak up for alternative values.

Dear Mishal,
Great job speaking up. I'm hoping that greed has not completely taken over. I know humanity still exist and is shown to us through the many great deeds of others. I just got done watching CNN's Hero Of The Year. Tremendous show that highlighted the great work and ideas of 10 heroes worldwide. You should see if you can get a copy of the show. It will inspire and re-energize you.
Thanks again,
Maroun

Lost Religion?

Mashal,
Could it be that all the problems above are caused by the loss of religion? If you're still looking for answers, Islam has them.

Sir, as always, wise insights.
We forget that life is for living today, not saving up for a tomorrow that might never come.

Thanks for this excellent article. You are right. And we should not work for money, but we let money work for us. But let me add that another root cause of evil is poverty. It is why we crave for money, so that we can escape a life like hell caused by being poor. The problem is, after acquiring enough money and we escape out of poverty, we want more and more so that we can protect ourselves from going back living like a rat. We do it not just for ourselves, but for our children and all our loved ones. This is one main reason why we painstakingly leave our families back home and work. This is the real rat trap.

In our greed to acquire more "MONEY" for the FUTURE we have lost track of the gift from GOD - The PRESENT - Thanks for the thought provoking article

Mr Kanoo, you always have thought provoking articles and this is yet another - yes the greed - not the money has becaome the bane of existence in a material world.
It is time to get back to basics - the principles that are the root of life - family - the protection of it, and the sheer joy in it's existence. Health Happiness and love are all things that cannot be bought, yet they are the essential spirit of what makes life worthwhile. To be wealthy and have not known the laughter of family around you must be a truly lonely existence.
We all need money to exist, but it should not become the focal point of our existence.

A very well written point of view with carefully chosen words. Indeed the root cause of evil in present times is GREED. The present education system was designed by Plato to generate philosophers so that they run the society in the right manner. Unfortunately as pointed by Mr. Mishal it has now completely degenerated and needs a major correction.
No doubt we all will be guilty to the next generations unless we actively do something about it.

Re:The Rat Trap -A Good way to sum up current Money race

Well Done, Mr. Kanoo. Some one steps up and says the truth. Its very hard to ignore Money in today's world. You need it, you breathe it and you love it. and some times, you start living for it.
I always claim that " You don't live to eat, but eat to live". So, there is more in life than making money.
If we look closely at what has happened in the past decade on the economic front, there was a greed in the market. Every body wanted to be a Millionaire, then a Billionaire and then some thing more. There was no end to greed, no content, no stops. This bounds to cause trouble in the end. There is always ONE winner in a race and the rest should try to comepete again learning from failure. Instead, if they all try to WIN the first prize, they will all fail.
Its important to identify your goal and then work around that. be patience. Money will come to you, Family and Love won't.

too true

I am sure many in the UAE are now wishing they'd taken a more cautious approach to investing and business. The spirit of greed blinded many to the risks; people were chasing unrealistic profits, convinced that high returns of 20-30% were also completely safe. Any basic economic understanding would lead one to know that risk and reward are directly related, but people were blinded by the lure to get rich quick without putting in any work.
I know Mr Kanoo was one of the few public voices in the UAE urging a more 'long term' view, I recall one column where he commented about Warren Buffet 'missing out' on dotcoms - his judgement about the risk was later proven completely correct.
I respect Mr Kanoo as one of the few voices in the UAE prepared to voice some caution during the boom times - he has of course be proven completely correct.
If the present economic troubles teach us anything about entrepreneurship and investing, it is that we should always question the 'accepted' consensus view and learn to think logically for ourselves. And when the profits look biggest, make sure you are not blinded by dollar signs, but are always cautious and balancing the risks.
