What are they afraid of?

Why don't Etisalat and Du just sit together and finally give in to what their customers have been demanding this whole time... they KNOW people want MUCH higher speeds for MUCH less money... if they do the maths they can provide that, and since more people would be signing up they can make up for the lost revenue per user that way... otherwise they will be the sole result for corporations leaving Dubai just as they did the more affluent countries in Europe recently.

misleading headline

You are publishing a very misleading headline. Comparing the total cost of broadband with the GDP is absurd.

Just a few days back, Arabian Business had published that the Mid-east broadband prices are too high

Compare the prices here with the recently launched 50MB connection of Virgin in the UK starting at about Dhs. 175/-.

Low percentage compared to GDP is due to the low penetration of broadband and not due to low prices. If you want to compare the prices in GCC, publish the monthly rental of a 512K connection in the 6 countries.

Socail responsibility

Some people could argue that this is being generous with others people money.

Social responsibilty

From a different viewpoint it must be noted that Etisalat has taken on large social responsibilities by investing large sums of its revenues into its workforce, which boasts the highest numbers of Emirati. As a customer you can decide to tell yourself part of your telcom bill can be seen as development aid.

get real

i had an 8MB cable connection in Japan 7 years ago for the same price as what I pay in Dubai for a 256K line!!!

As someone who has lived around the world, (including Iraq), this is NOT a great deal. Open up the telecommunications to the world and let foreign companies into the region and watch the prices drop substantially. I feel like I stepped back in time in Dubai. The city of the future with the communications infrastructure of the past. Great motto...

Head in the Sand...

Of course Etisalat is good and many times the cost compared to other countries. Mr. Head-in-the-sands Rajesh, compare the prices here with India where you probably come from.

Why is it that everytime there is an intelligent debate, you are shown the door like 'go back to where you came from' or ' Iraq or Mauritania in this case ?

moving again.

OK I i will take the hint. Next week I am flying to Europe to set up a second company, all the technical work will be done from there, Nothing from Dubai.

Prices for a 2mbit business connection are up to 23,000 dirhams.... do your maths.

Not good

Rajesh - behave man! It's all well and good having 4 Mbits to your home, but the onward capacity is nowhere near that, and this shows a lack of sufficient peering points for the UAE Internet backbone. Internet access is completely overpriced for what you get - and businesses are completely exploited if they want to move to leased lines so they end up staying on ADSL and then incurring usage charges (a direct result if insufficient peering). One word would improve things dramatically - competition!

@ Rajesh S

Are you kidding? The monopoly/duopoly operators in the Middle East have some of most expensive broadband services in the world.

In markets that are way behind the rest of the world like Mauritania, or where there have been considerable problems, like Iraq, its understandable that costs are high, but in small, mainly urban countries with lots of cash and the desire to be global business hubs, their high broadband rates are inexcusable.

cheapest and slower connection ever!

Comparing the amount of money we pay for the basic package (256kbps), back home (Brazil) I could get a combo (cable tv, telefone connection and 1mb internet) for AED 60.00
So, how we can say this is cheap?!?! Unfortunately there is no competition in this field yet...

Good

This should silence all those who criticised Etisalat. Fact is , Etisalat's broadband is excellent for this part of the world, and as this report shows, its extremely cheap as well. Those who still dont like it can move to Iraq and Mauritania!
