Regardless

Stop insinuating that the government is fooling us, instead ask yourself as an individual if throwing any sort of party is appropriate while our neighbors are dying. If you carry on complaining, it could mean that you really really want to party no matter what, even if the death toll now reaches 1,200 and there are thousands who are wounded. That is total indifference that deserves nothing but a condemnation.

Judgement
Posted by Shakizada at 11:13 UAE time
No one has the right to make the judgements upon the taken action regarding cancelling the festival opening event. UAE is continousely supporting the distressed people in Gasa morally, economically and financially, and all of you aware that UAE is the forefront country to send aids to Gaza. What is going on in Gaza is painful for us. This is the ringht directive taken to cancel the festival opening event, as the 32 days is aimed to promote the trade only, internationally.

UAE Donation to Gaza
Posted by dude2000 at 03:03 UAE time
No one can claim that UAE didn't support people of Gaza with donations... please read news paper about the results of the donation campaign held across all UAE TV stations last Friday.

International Media

The reason partying is being canceled is so that the international media is not given an easy opportunity to diverge from the present subject by accusing people in the region of partying while there are other suffering. We would be equally judgmental had we heard of partying in Miami right after 9/11. I'm sure there was, but it wasn't publicly flaunted.

Again?

Whilst the plight of the Palestinians is certainly a global and a regional issue which deserves attention, I fail to see the relevance of canceling DSF or indeed any of the lavish celebrations that are actually a reason to visit Dubai. In the past few years DSF has been cancelled on more than one occasion and as far as visitors are concerned, if it's not going to happen, they will likely not bother coming. Planning a trip takes time and finding the reason for actually coming to Dubai has been cancelled is somewhat an anticlimax.

It's all about the money

Shakizada I think you have your head in the sand!
Cancelling the whole DSF would make more of an impact of solidarity if you can really compare it, not saving a few $$ on fireworks etc... Same applied to NY eve....what a disaster!
I think the vision is starting to cloud over now that the credit crisis has hit Dubai, and corner cutting and cost saving is the order of the day!
Shall be very interested to see who is left here this time next year.....

Shakizada , Anyone Who has lived in this country is well aware that what the ruler say's goes.
And it is Very admirable of him to show solidarity towards the people of Gaza by means of cancelling the DSF opening festivities.
However when did any ruler in this country imply that citizens are not allowed to make any comments?
Is this your directive? or are you speaking on behalf of the ruler , I would be very interested to find out.
I also wonder why there are comments sections in the press such as this, if one isn’t permitted to voice his opinion through comments. Maybe you could issue a directive on that one?
The main issue AT STAKE is the suffering and pain and the need of the Palestinians in Gaza , Cancelling the opening party of the DSF wont feed them or assist with there medical requirements
Donating some of the “32-day event prizes worth millions of dirham’s that will be given to shoppers every day” would!

Pray
Posted by Rania at 11:38 UAE time
Cancelling a party from the behalf of his Highness, is an act of solidarity that we should respect.
Each one has his own way to show his feelings !! And judging each other's way is really useless & a waste of time, instead we should think of what we can do for them.
I think to pray for them is the best & it's my way.
So May God bless us all & we all hope that war & all catastrophe stop in the whole world as soon as possible.

Donations

I also agree - if the UAE really wants to make a difference, donations in the form of money or even products would make much more sense. I appreciate where they are coming from with the sentiment, but to make an impact, Gaza needs more than "sentiments".

Party cancelled
Posted by dave h at 08:09 UAE time
Given the economic climate, the cancellation of the party is far more likely to be an attempt to save a few million dirhams, but of course to admit that would be a big loss of face, whereas tying it in to the tragedy in Gaza is the perfect cop-out. Come on , guys, do you really think we are that stupid?

Gaza victims receiving a donation of 10% of the proceeds of an event where people are partying and rejoicing is the joke and half-hearted not to mention inconsiderate and indifferent, whereas halting a celebration while the neighborus are dying is indeed an act of solidarity. For sure the government and the people are already taking part in charity causes for the gazans -- who won't or who can't? But what completes the act of support is the heartfelt act of support. Financial aid alone is useless while the givers do not really care, but giving up festivities as well is something to the hearts of the miserable. Funny how people could celebrate in the name of solidarity because 10% of its proceeds is given away to a war-torn race. Isn't it tantamount to slapping a one-thousand bill to the face of a suffering Palestinian? Enough of your indifference and start feeling the pain of others!

proportionate response ?
Posted by Rob at 21:26 UAE time
The term ‘proportionate response’ has been thrown around in the press a lot lately in discussions regarding the Israeli / Hamas conflict. Is merely cancelling the opening ceremonies of the Shopping Festival a proportionate response to the loss of life and suffering of thousands? I mean really, if the goal is to make a statement, would it not be best to cancel the shopping festival altogether or to vow to donate at least %10 of the proceeds to the people of GAZA? Cancelling the opening ceremonies of the Shopping Festival? Who cares about the opening ceremonies? This strikes me as a feeble, half hearted way to recognise the suffering of the people of GAZA so long as it does not interfere with the profits to be made in Dubai. What a joke.
