totally unfair
Posted by sgawdat at 08:24 UAE time
in the heat of the summer, i used to take a cab from where i live to Mall of the Emirates on fridays to get some food from Carrefour for the week, i used to pay 5 AED, i live close to the mall but can't really walk with heavy bags in a 50 degree temp. now i'll have to pay 10 AED which is the double!!
that was the straw, it's not about the money, it's about taking decisions like this without any consideration of it's effects, come on, we're in the middle of a financial crisis for god's sake and people are losing their jobs and getting lower salaries, what type of gov. is this?

unfair move
Posted by abdul mateen at 09:28 UAE time
Rta should reconsider hiking minimum fare, public utilities are meant for the convenience and comfort of public, therefore, this move is unfair & wil certainly hit the common man. authorities concern should primarily consider gorund realities, prior to taking such decisions. publics suffering & concern shouldnt be neglected.

Do they Really Read What we Write.........??????
Posted by John Smith at 09:39 UAE time
I believe "Arabian Business" has provided a vent to all the capped concerns of a common man through this forum. I believe that their readership is a broad spectrum of "Literate and Socially Aware" people of all ethnic and educational backgrounds.
All of the readers writing their concerns including myself puts in lots of effort and time.......... Now who is benefiting from all this. Best scenario would be that RESPONSIBLE OFFICIALS from various GOVT DEPARTMENTS and AUTHORITIES read and analyze what is the general reaction from public. They can recieve 1st hand ground reality from the public itself, which can play a constructive part in improving their policies and implementation methods.
Arabian Business can also help the cause by contacting OFFICIALS in various DEPARTMENTS & AUTHORITIES and send them free subscriptions of this forum.

Rather than complaining..do this..
Posted by Kaptain at 13:27 UAE time
People who have complained about the rise, here is a suggestion, I walked twice in a week for 5-8 kilometers in Dubai to attend a prosperity consultancy meeting, as I didn't want to hire a taxi which is to get stuck usually in jams; also by then there were no taxis available as hundreds were already waiting, fighting, queuing up for just one, back in Feb-Mar '08.
5-8 kilometer walk not only was refreshing, even in summers, it was healthy.
Initially it was difficult like walking, alone, for straight 2 hours but then it was routine, my body adjusted and then I didn't even notice it as there are so many things to think about when you are living in Dubai, notably the job stress and insecurity.
So walking would, if not eliminate wholly, would reduce that stress and allow you to live longer.
So don't worry, take a bicycle and a FM radio and take a ride!

RE: Wise Decision...... Reply to ASOUS
Posted by John Smith at 11:57 UAE time
With all due respect Mr. ASOUS you are comparing Apples with Oranges........... I beleive you missed out on the basic fact that START FARE from any Airport compared to a normal City Cab is substantially high. Try a cab out of Dubai Airport to Dubai Marina and you will see how it will drill a hole in your pocket.

TAXI FARE
Posted by geeta at 11:47 UAE time
As Mr Mounir puts it .....this news article is faulty. the RTA is *Considering* raising the minimum fare to 10 dirhams; the decision has not been made yet and is not effective immediatly.
Has it hiked or has it not?????
I think RTA should not consider doing so. Abu Dhabi too has public transprot bus services within the city. Their fare starts at Dhs. 1/- whereas Dubai starts at Dhs. 2/-. Dont try pulling all strings.....

Public transportation is more expensive than travelling by your own car
Posted by MD at 09:48 UAE time
If RTA is serious about implementing the AED 10 minimum charge for a taxi ride, have they given thought to what the actual cost would be for a person who wishes to travel by the Metro & taxi? John Smith was absolutely spot on, a trip to the office would now cost atleast AED 40 per day, not including the Metro ticket. Taxi from home to the station, then station to the office in the morning would cost AED 20 and then another AED 20 in the evening. Which works out to AED 200 per week just for taxi fares!! How can the average person afford that?
Come on RTA, please revise your decision.

MINIMUM TAXI FARE
Posted by RAMA at 15:39 UAE time
IT IS PURELY NOT THE RIGHT TIME TO ADVANCE WITH ANY CHANGES IN FARE. I STRONGLY FEEL THAT RTA SHOULD WAIT TILL THE TRAN SERVICES ARE FULLY OPERATIONAL

This makes me angry!
Posted by John at 12:58 UAE time
Yes the waiting time for a taxi has reduced but this is not down to the effectiveness of RTA but because of all the redundancies. With so many people having lost their jobs or having taken pay cuts, obviously less people are taking taxis = more on the road = less waiting time.
I am so sick of the attitude of taxi drivers in this country. For starters they make you feel quilty about where you want to go if it involves going through traffic (i'm sorry i'll move my villa next time just for you Mr Taxi Driver) - i've had many a taxi driver, swear, hit the steering wheel, get angry etc. because they're not happy about having to sit in traffic. Well sorry but traffic is a major part of living in Dubai so i'm not about to start feeling guilty!!! They will usually suggest an alternative route which is usually longer and don't understand that i don't want to pay an extra 5 Dirhams just to make the journey 5 minutes shorter.
Then there's the taxi drivers who actually FALL ASLEEP at the wheel - i've lived here a year and this has happened to me 3 times so far!
There's the taxi drivers who get to roads with busy traffic and then get angry about the traffic "oooh the traffic's TOO bad!!!!!" And then look at you as if to say - GET OUT! To which i have to argue that i really can't be dumped on Al Wasl Road and i really need to go home, and i really am sorry about the traffic but i do this journey every day and it's really not that bad..so please take me home...
I once had a taxi driver complain about how little he earns, and he listed his usual monthly outgoings...including 3000 Dirhams of traffic fines?! Well where is the common sense of these people that if they drove sensibly and safely that they would get less traffic fines and more money at the end of the month.
Then there's the taxi drivers who won't let you in their taxis because it's not far enough....or those who presume ure a tourist and go the longest possible route to add the extra distance.
And now the RTA are increasing taxi fares?! Have they not realised that there's a recession?!?!?! I'm sure in a few months the RTA will announce that through their brilliance they have reduced the waiting times even further for a taxi...well this is obviously because even less people will be taking taxis with a fare hike.
Oh well taxi drivers of Dubai, i've always felt sorry for you with your low wages and long working hours - but you will no longer be getting any tips from me! I used to give you an extra 3 or 4 Dirhams but now you won't be getting anything extra.

get your facts right
Posted by Mounir at 12:31 UAE time
This news article is faulty. the RTA is *Considering* raising the minimum fare to 10 dirhams; the decision has not been made yet and is not effective immediatly.
the only increase effective immediatly *which is in fact old news* is that of the dubai-sharjah trips, whereby the fare will start at 20 dirhams.

Loyal towards Taxi Drivers
Posted by Zulkif at 12:29 UAE time
Its is really un understandable that coz of some counted taxi drivers.Authorities wants to put burden on all the citizen and non citizen of country. Instead of forcing Taxi companies to reduce their cost they had approved to increase this type of fares when everybody knows they have limited amount of money in their pocket.

Why not reduce the target for taxi drivers
Posted by MD at 11:51 UAE time
Yet another example of RTA and other govt bodies not really understanding the situation and coming up with ridiculous solutions. Wouldn't it have been easier to reduce the targets for the taxi drivers? This would encourage the taxi drivers to pick up passengers wanting to travel short distances and also make it easier for passengers to get to where they want to go?
RTA team should be forced to travel ONLY by the existing public transport with a monthly budget of AED 350 only, then they will understand the plight of the common man.

AED10 min taxi fare?!
Posted by WB at 10:54 UAE time
This is completely preposterous!! This among other increasing costs (during an economic downturn?!) are driving the population of Dubai outa town...at quite some speed! No longer cost competitive with other business hubs in the world.
Moreover there are very good reasons for the need to take short trips with a taxi 1) no/lack of sidewalks (al Barsha for example) 2) summer heat 3) no bicycle paths 4) lack of proper infrastructure/ public transport system (where's the metro?!). This could have a riple effect on not only the economy, but Dubai's nightlife and could increase the number or cars on the roads.
If anything you could cap the minimum fare at a certain range only; if its less then 3/4/5km or whatever. Would that not be more appropriate?! It seems this is (once again) all about "greed".
Think twice...

Holding the start fare as is, I believe the minimum fare of 10 AED is very reasonable.

What to do yani?

I took taxi from Burjuman to Karama. I tell the driver to make 3 rounds on my building. When the fare reach 10 dirham, I ask him to stop. Simple yani.
