The Truth
Posted by mr muscle at 15:22 UAE time
This is simply the opinion of someone who has a vested interest in the success or failure of Dubai as a whole. Dubai was a great idea once, it has been ruined by those who want to impress their view on everybody that passes through. What Dubai should have been was a liberal oasis in the ME region, where multinational and multicultures mix in a blend that suits everyone....rather like Singapore but with more sand. Unfortunately, it isn't and never will be Singapore.

Dear Omar,
Thanks for your insight, and yes, I am leaving - not because I lost my job, because I realise there are much better places in the world to live and there is only so much a "tax" free salary compensates a lower standard of life.
But Omar, be careful for what you wish for, I am not the only one with this sentiment...

Be careful what you wish for.

Yet more advice from people who want it to be illegal to criticise Dubai. How many times have i read that the people who are offering positive criticisms of Dubai should "go straight to the airport!" Well, you know what, be careful what you wish for. Many people are leaving and returning to their home countries. MOE is obviously not one of Dubai's many "white elephants", but please allow the sceptics their opinions of figures released by Landlords who are obviously nervous about collapsing retail figures. This is just the first part of a 5-10 year downturn in retail worldwide. Obviously the shopping mall is a different attraction in the desert, particularly in the hot summer months. Nevertheless, the 25 year long credit bubble is finally over and consumers can no longer use their homes as ATM machines as property values spiralled upwards out of control. People and companies are starting to cut back on holiday's, luxury purchases & unneccesary expenses.

Giddy UP Omar!!!

Omar, my friend, you are correct in all you say!! Mall of the Emirates shops pay the bills for shops in other Dubai malls. Anyone in the retail trade in the UAE knows this. I too would be willing to pay a commission to get a space in MOE but it is impossible. Unless you are "connected" and know someone at MAF or you are one of the big retail companies like Al Shaya or Americana (F&B) it is near impossible.

The truth
Posted by Omar at 17:05 UAE time
Dear All,
A solid UNDEBATABLE FACT is that NO ONE is forcing all those retailers to come and rent at MOE. They come, wait for the manager, who might not be necessarily very nice in welcoming people, to see him and do their utmost to clinch any space!
If those shops were not doing well, they would have closed instantly or you think they are a charity?!
Any shop that is not doing well can close but they dont. Why?Bcz the truth is that they are doing ok - NOT AT ALL like 2007-08 but still OK. As you all know, there is a very long waiting list for any space at MOE. Yes, go and ask if you manage to see the manager or even a secretary!!
So stop assuming. I am ready to send you my mobile # NOW and pay you a decent commission if you manage to get me any space at MOE. My wife would love to open a shop there!
FYI, i am a senior Arab American executive at DIFC advising global firms that wish to come to Dubai. I do not get paid for anything and i say the truth 100%.I do have many reservations about many things in Dubai but overall Dubai is second to none at least for the entire MEASA region.
You MUST know the positioning of Dubai to judge if Dubai is suitable for you. I suggest you read the book My Vision of Sheikh Mohammed, the ruler of Dubai to know what Dubai is allm about or at least how its owner wants it to be! Unfortunately, the book is available in Arabic only at this stage so try to get help from a friend if you dont speak Arabic.
Benchmarking is abosolutely a key tool for a world-class mall like MOE. See the figures before you submit your opinion. I receive daily reports from Reuters, Bloomberg, Zawya and i can judge! FYI, all malls have censors at the main gates that tick precisely the # of incomers! So the figures are accurate 100% or at least 80% since there are some employees who might be counted when they go to smoke.
I repeat that i am defending the truth and nothing but the truth. I really feel bad when i see foreigners driving nice cars that they can not dream of in their home countries and at the end giving negative input about Dubai.
Dubai is a part of UAE and it's for its own people. Whoever does not like it can head NOW to the airport. But you do NOT DARE. Bcz you fear the truth.
I am spending some of my precious time writing these comments bcz i hate hypocrisy and being mean.

Benchmarking the drop worldwide against the drop in Dubai and then assuming that the lower figure is an attempt to hide facts is not scientific at all. Don't forget that you live in Dubai and you don't have much options for family day out except the malls especially during the hot summer. In other countries you have many more choices for a family day out without having to suffer from the heat and dust.

How about the truth Mr. Omar. Its more like a 40% drop in luxury sales. Especially since prices in the UK and USA are much cheaper than Dubai, i doubt tourists or locals are dumb enough to pay MOE prices for luxury goods. We have smartened up and tightned our wallets. So how about giving us the truth and being professional in your job

Whoever Omar is in real life, and one suspects he is a PR company executive using New Media for the benefit of a client, Twit(ter) that he is, one has to give him support, or is Omar actually a curvy Brit blonde PR babe in actuality?

With all their resources, $60k a month on PR and financial clout, why don't these shopkeepers spend a little money on proper research. Words such as "about" and "maybe" aren't very scientific, so when your tenants come to you and say the rent doesn't make sense because of the footfall, you have ammunition to support your high prices. If footfall is down only 2 per cent then that means a hell of a lot of people are window shopping, which doesn't bode well for a consumer-driven recovery in Dubai's faltering economy.

Congratulations

I would really like to congratulate the management of Mall of Emirates for the big achievements. 20% drop ONLY is perhaps the world's best achievement in the retail sector. All malls in the entire globe have witnessed drops by 50-70%. It's a global crisis never witnessed in history so 20% is bearable and understandable. Let's not be greedy and instead reasonable. 2009 is an ultra-challenging year and we all have to tighten the belts all around the world!
Well done! But please MOE management, we need more promotions and competitions. I suggest a loyalty card. You have already been innovative esp. in marketing but you can do much more.
