difference market - different buyers.
but luxury stuff deserves this- as they are sold much more than what they worth, and the media is helping the luxury retailer to sell the stuff - so unhealthy to the teenagers.
The mature buyer wont buy fake stuff but the genuine one- and i guess that is the initial intentions of those great designer, they wont care someone bought a fake bag just for a flashy effect.

Hidden message...

There is a message to infer in the sudden raids being carried out. Earlier when everything was hunky dory, no body bothered to raid these shops in DM and turned a blind eye. Today most businesses seem to be terribly affected due to the present economic crisis and must have pressured the Dubai Customs to act now! So, the present economic crisis is still biting all the big guns here...

Fake USBs
Posted by Khawar Nehal at 00:53 UAE time
Few days ago.
Deira City Center. Sharaf DG.
Warning to consumers. Fake USB Data Traveller D400 4GB.
Does not work. Same packing.
No serial number
No blue light.
Hex nut replaced with a round one on the swivel.
Does not format.
Had to be replaced. I gave it to my brother to get is replaced with the receipt.
So if you are buying any USBs which do not work. check the internet for what the real one looks like. Usually there may be a 10 - 20 Aed discount on the fake one but it is worthless as junk.
I bet if we open the fake usb the memory chip would also be missing.
Also no serial number. This from a company like Kingston.
So if Sharaf DG can be fooled by some suppliers, then people should be extra careful and KEEP YOUR RECEIPTS.

Funny you should say that Paul
Posted by Toby at 17:06 UAE time
Actually I am a businessman and yes I do design new products.
I expect people to copy what I do, and they will use the same concept but it will different in some way, so that's ok. Now if someone ran a spoof site using my brand name using an identical product then I agree that's NOT ok!
I agree in most part with what you say, but in my view it's where and how the imitation is sold as to whether it is counterfeit, this was the main point of my comment.
Taking an example from DM, the minute you glance at an imitation ipod you know that it is not the real thing, even the logo is wrong, everyone knows they are not buying a real ipod.
But if I went into an recognised retail chain and bought a counterfeit iPod at full list price, then Apple and I have every right to be furious and get the place closed down by the authorities.
Have a good weekend, will I see you in DM or Karama this weekend Paul?

Toby, you obviously are not a business person.
I am sure if you ever invented or designed something, you'd feel very annoyed if it turned out you'd spent all the money on development and marketing of a quality item only to see someone else steal your designs, not pay you for your ideas and work, and undersell you with cheap and nasty copies.
Of course people in DM probably know they are buying copies. That does not make it any less damaging to the producers of the genuine article.
Drug dealers simply meet the demand, and those buying know what they are buying. Does that make it ok then?

The DM traders know that "look-a-likes" have a massive market here in Dubai and they simply meet the demand, what's wrong with that? Does anyone SERIOUSLY go to DM to buy a genuine ipod/gucci bag/etc? If they do, they deserve to get ripped!

Its copyright protection

Geekay, it does not really matter when the authorities are cracking and "why they did not do in the past" is not relevant here. It is ok to make products for cheaper quality, no one has got issues. The problem relies in cloning products making it difficult to make out the original from the duplicate.
Let's not forget a Gulf News reader who lost money buying last year an iPhone from Bur Dubai market only to realise a dancing lady instead of Apple logo on startup. So whether you like it or not, counterfeit products are unhealthy for the market and needs to be cracked down. Am sure no one wants to buy counterfeit products and pay original product price.
Geekay, it would be greatly appreciated if you could stop being the negative energy, whining and complaining about everything in UAE.

Why?

Everybody who shops there knows most of the stuff is fake and nothing really carries any quality guarantee, but that is what they can afford and that is what they want to buy. This action will not channel those shoppers to the fancy malls, it will simply make them stop shopping.

Surprise.. Surprise
Posted by Geekay at 16:25 UAE time
It is such a surprise that the Dubai authorities have noticed this practise in Dragon Mart after all these years. Goods from China are sold at cheaper rates with absolutely no warranty for the past few years and the authorities did nothing about it. It is very surprising that some action has been taken only now. Public believe the shops in Dragon Mart have been licensed by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce.
