on time and budget

On the the plus side, with all the empty apartments in Dubai coming online they can save themselves the trouble of building an athletes village.

2020 Olympics

The Olympic Games is for the entire world, for all races, colours, religions, politics. Dubai will not exclude anyone because it is unthinkable.

The Games that belong to the World...
Posted by BV at 10:33 UAE time
I agree with Shakir that the Olympic Games belong to the Entire World, and hence there is no reason why Dubai can't BID for the games... however, all the typical reasons aside like money, temperature, facilities, natural environment etc... IF the Olympic Games indeed belong to the Entire World, and EVERYONE has a right to bid and take part...
What's Dubai going to do when the Israely contingency applies to take part? Are they going to refuse all of them entry 'for their own safety'?
There are many more things required in this world to be eligible for the Olympic Games than just money... openness and acceptance to all races and cultures is one of the KEY ingredients.

2020 Olympics

I salute Dubai's ambition and its vision to host the 2020 Olympics. The Olympics games belong to the entire world and not only to cold countries. Doubters said before that tourists will never come here because it is too hot. They were proved wrong. I wish Dubai the best of luck in its efforts.

Using constructive comments in favour.....

For all that are crying 'stop Dubai bashing' may I remind you that each Country, City, Nation etc. went through the same ordeals some time during their creation. Stop moaning and face the music - take the comments as constructive comments and work on them to create something better or to improvise! Stop being a 'spoiled child' and listen, instead of putting your hands on your ears and doing the 'nah I can't hear you'.
Some of the comments do make sense and one should consider them to be able to place a well thought plan for a proposal. I am certain these comments are being discussed by the officials as we type!
I consider it a great iniative from the UAE to try & bid for the Olympics. Every country with a vision has the right to and I will support it.
But...(yes there is a but)..will the UAE openly accept Israel as a country to participate?! Would that not anger many fellow arab/muslim nations? We shall wait & see.....

Will they never learn ..... ?

Going to be a tad expensive to make a canoe slalom course anywhere except maybe Hatta. Ain't a lot of wind for sailing events. Rowing in Business Bay, anyone? But it's tidal.....
Where is the cycling velodrome?
Yes many things can be done with money - but building expensive facilities which will never be properly utilised afterwards should be low on Dubia's list of priorities in these troubled times.
There are many events that Dubai and/or UAE are well suited to hosting - but in my opinion a 'summer' Olympics isn't one of them.

It could happen...

Ok, heat is an issue whether we like it or not but I don't believe it would prevent the Middle East from hosting the Olympics. September is still too hot. October is more likely.
I believe Qatar has put their hat in the ring for the 2016 Olympics. If they were to win this bid (unlikely) the Olympics would not be held in the Middle East again for probably 40 or 50 years. I believe Dubai would have a better shot than Qatar if there was a joint bid submitted with Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Using athletic venues in both Emirates seems like a better idea and would probably provide a better chance at winning the bid. Everyone knows Dubai right now but in 5 years everyone will know Abu Dhabi as well. A joint bid, a UAE bid, is the way to go.

would be great but!!!

It would be great to have it here, but will be tough to clinch the deal, Bahrain, tried to get it a few years ago but were refused because they insisted in moving the games to October/November instead of the traditional August. Dubai may have the same stumbling block, but if the government can put together a feasable proposal, then why not?

Is bashing the new trend?
Posted by MM at 17:08 UAE time
Agreeing to Zafar, I must ask everyone... is bashing the new trend in here? Shut up and keep jealousy to yourself.
Good going government. Good luck on this venture. It is indeed a positive move and proves govt is on track to take Dubai to next level.
P.S.: Ignore bashers, a lot of them have been washed out in this redundancy trends and more will get wiped out.

It's a sad day when being pragmatic and thinking things through is now 'Dubai bashing'....

Great Initiative!

Can you guys stop Dubai bashing and appreciate the efforts of the government. I don't understand why Dubai cannot bid for the 2020 Olympics? It seems some of the readers are obsessed with Ramadan and 45 degrees temperature - how naive of these guys.
Dubai has all the potential and capabilities to host the Olympics as any nation on this planet. What the world thinks Dubai performs!

Patience?
Posted by Doug at 16:41 UAE time
Could we at least make sure we get Sports City up and running first before we start getting overexcited? Great idea, if it's held at a sensible time of year, but Dubai will need to prove it can build working world-class sports facilities first. It'll either need to be held in after September or before May - it'll be Ramadan in May 2020 and that will cause problems with large numbers of tourists probably unaware of the requirements, and with the athletes from the UAE who won't be able to compete at their very best without adequate nutrition.

The Olympics......do me a favour!

I would like to know how they plan to hold the Olympics in a country where the average daytime temperature in August is 45 degrees plus! Good luck to those in training for the 2020 Marathon!!!!
