10,000 AED is too much, seems they dont want people to be settled in there.

If the spouse also earns , can the joint income will be considered for the VISA .its really strange to know this ammendment , it should be on an individual case , its very demotivating , or else increase the basic salary which will lead to 10,000 AED

Major needs to rethink

The real estate rentals in UAE need to be corrected tomorrow if not today as they are grossly wrong when you make the PCI / Rental analysis of houses in UAE with other countries. AED 10,000 per month figure seems grossly wrong for Dubai. Major General Nasser Al Awadi Al Menhali needs to rethink.

no way

I think it's not a right decision in such crises days like this, moreover most of the companies has decrease the salary, so it will be very difficult for most of the people to sponsor their families

Answer to Mr. Black

IS it reallty for the children??? you also have to take care of those who takes care of the children, and 1 track mind will always think that the problem is out there, not inside their domain. Let's meet halfway, increase the salary cap, but also fix the landlord problem, spiraling cost of goods. and workers protection against these employers. dont lecture me about human rights also, this is about fairness.

Im Married by the way and a Roman Catholic, dont teach me about family if you dont have one...,

In another couple of years...

In another couple of years don't be surprised if they raise the bar to bring your families by another 10 000. Rather than control spiralling costs and a real estate sector that has gone absolutely bonkers - this is definitely the wrong way to handle the situation.

Consider this situation - I earn 7000 dirhams - I have decent independant accomodation in Ras Al KHaimah or Umm Al Quwain for an example and I live a decent but very simple lifestyle - yet I am in no way allowed to sponsor my wife because of this drafted law. However someone who earns a top notch five digit salary yet engaging in a lavish lifestyle in debt is eligible. This salary cap is madness beyond belief. The authorities must understand that merely putting a salary cap on this will not solve the problem at all. The issue of greedy landlords has still not been resolved at all. Consider the situation here - Dubai would be literally emptied of families save for the minute 20 percent of the expatriate population who do earn 5 digit salaries. How many of those middle income professionals who had their families here who were forced to send them back would stay behind. It is inhuman and cruel - such an act would shift the economy behind an entire decade.

The world situation isn't as how it was a few years ago.

I honestly hope they reconsider before its too late and the only inhabitants of the UAE would be a dwindling tourist population.

To Black about new residency law...

I agree with you that it is better to provide seperate housing to ones own family and in the present situation we need a minimum 10k for that purpose. But....

You are single so you may not understand how difficult it is for most parents to stay seperate from kids. Thank fully my company provides accomodation and my family is here. My kids went to my native place last week with out us and already we are missing them... I find it difficult to stay seperated from them even for two weeks so I can very well understand the feelings of parents away from their loved ones and I sympathize with them.

The solution is to provide affordable housing to most of them if not all. More over an increase of single men may rise the crime rate.... After al, humans are not perfect. Some times when I go to near by park with my kids I feel scared due to the large number of single men there...some of them stare at you... ( I dress decently so it is not because of my dress that they stare...) ofcourse I just ignore it but it makes you uncomfortable... Very few families to be seen now a days so now we go to a far off park which is meant only for families.... the situation will get more worse if the salary limit is raised....

FIX THE SITUATION

The attitude of core group who has recommended the new rule of 10K is misguided and they have taken a short cut to the problem of providing affordable housing to its residents. In any country or economy, there will be a mix of people with variable income, and it is responsibility of govt to look after this segment that keeps the infracture and systems continously working, enabling the city to keep going. I wouldn't be surprised, if another core group will conduct a study in another 5 or 10 years from now, and recommend that, govt should focus on retaining more families here, to run the city. Look what happened to Satwa project, it was flooded with tear drops of all the families evicted from there, and now the project itself got doomed !!! Do not let this happen this to your beautiful country. Beirut was once known as heaven on earth - look at where they are now !!!!!!!

I really don’t understand why all the comments here are 90% negative. The law state’s to better children’s situation. I, for one would not want my child to be sharing a house with any other except immediate family members. I’d rather send them home to live with my mom’s or dad’s back on my own country where I’m sure they’ll be more comfortable. Don’t start and try and lecture me about human rights, being rich or poor, having no heart or selfish. I’d rather be alone and happy knowing my children is safe and well situated. Does that sound selfish?

This law is for the welfare of children not adults. And is also intended to prevent two different families from living in one roof. UAE is an Arab country. It is only trying to uphold it’s traditional ways.

The next step would be to segregate single male and female into different buildings/floors/villas, which is rampantly mixing these days.

This country is rich and doesn’t need rent/retail/visa money to get by. And yes, it will absolutely go back to riding camels if it means pleasing God.

I am glad to know that this great nation is trying to revive its identity. But hope not to the extent of radicalism and compulsory wearing of burqa.

I’m single by the way and a Roman Catholic.

Respect.

Wow!

Hmm, where do I even start.

To begin with, there needs be a shift in attitude from ban-this-ban-that knee-jerk reactions to more constructive thinking on the part of policy makers. There are always several ways to address issues. I am sure if the guys at the top hired the right people to properly assess the full, long-term consequences of decisions, they could come up with some positive strategies which would boost the economy and make the people happy.

What about the laborers

What about the negative effects of thousands of workers being brought here without being given adequate compensation or decent accommodation ?

Would the general care to comment ?

Something is not clear enough.....

How all those people can survive with 6000 AED to support the wife and kids?
* At least one normal room/sharing would cost 2500 AED+
* Transport for the family(taxi, bus) +
* Medical Expences+
* School for kids (clothes, meal, essential things)+
* Food- for the whole family every day+
* DEWA and phone bills+
* Other unexpected expences

Obviously the Government have seen the very poor standard of living in general.

This is an invitation to Crime!

I agree with the comments of most of the readers which commented against this (proposed) new salary limit and have some questions which I looking the answeres for:

1) Is respectable minister going to bring any Minimum Wage Rate to the country for expatriates, whereby an Expat worker would be offered sufficient salary to sponsor his family?
2) What about fixing MAXIMUM RENT? Is anyone capable of doing it?
3) What if a person earning 10K looses the job and has to accept a job with lower pay?
4) Can anyone stop the greedy landlords from charging absorbitant and unrealistic rents?
5) What will happen to the fate of thousands of expats working in Govt. Sector (MOH, DOH, Municipality, Central Bank, Ports, Customs etc.) who currently earn less than 10K but live with their families ? Will they be asked to leave or be terminated or else send their families back?
6) Is respected police chief's statement incorrect where he has stated that if the people will be allowed to live with their families, the crime rate will reduce? (I believe asking for 10K salary is not at all ALLOWING someone to live with family)!
7) Why only the expatriates are BLAMED for SHARING an apartment or a villa? Why the people who make them do so are not talked about? (The employers paying less salaries & Landlords charging crazy rents!!)
8) Why do the policy-makers at Govt. departments always target expats? Why people forget that the economy of this region can not grow without expats' contribution?
9) Why can't Government or some developer build some properties with basic amenities to accommodate upper middle & middle income group families? (Like the old Sheikh colonies in Dubai which were made during H.H Sheikh Rashid's time)

UAE and in particular Dubai has been a center of attraction from decades and I believe it will continue to do so. Because God has blessed it with a geographical location from where any part of the globe is easily accessible; the only need for us is to respect God's gift and do justice to ALL its mankind. ......... Remember GOD is always with the Weak and Poor ..... (I hope Marcelle is reading this) ......

Narrow policy

I think one factor here is that some of the groups that are influencing government policy tend to look at every issue from the narrow perspective of "there are too many foreigners in the UAE". When you consider it only from this point of view, then the policy is a winner whatever happens to those affected; some will decide to leave with their families (less expats in the country), some will stay and send their families home (less expats in the country) and others will be successful in getting a pay rise in order to be able to keep their family here (expats become more expensive, thus reducing the demand for expat labour and eroding the cost-saving that results from employing expats instead of Nationals for clerical/junior executive jobs).

Of course, as other posters have commented, when looking at the bigger picture, the timing of this move is spectacularly bad; the country is already experiencing a reduction in the expat population anyway due to the economic situation, rents are becoming more affordable, meaning that people could actually survive on less money now anyway, and a further reduction in the white-collar population will likely cause a lot of problems for landlords, schools, shops, in fact just about anyone who services the needs of UAE residents, as many of these businesses will simultaneously experience a drop in demand for their product, a demand for increased wages from staff and the cost of hiring replacements for experienced staff who decide to leave. All in all, the last thing the faltering economy needs right now!

Marcelle, don't be so cruel

They think that everyone wants to lead a luxury life. A person getting a salary of 5000 + company accomodation and his wife working can live here happily. We people don't want to waste money for luxurious things. There is no point in wasting money like this. As biztrip mentioned these people are forgetting their routes which will lead them to great lose. Bcaz above all God is there. They are forgetting this often. Also as there is no consistency for the rules here people won't prefer this country to come and work. I think there is no security for job and life here.. Dear expats, its better for we people to go and settle in our country... Nothing in wasting time and life here
