Dubai diamond thieves captured
by Reuters on Monday, 30 April 2007
Police in Dubai have captured two members of a gang that stole diamonds worth about $4 million in the biggest heist in the United Arab Emirate, police said on Sunday.
A third suspect in the robbery at the Graff jewellery shop in Dubai's upscale Wafi City shopping centre on April 15 was arrested in an unnamed European country, police said, adding that a request for his extradition had been issued.
"Officers from Dubai police have left to foreign countries which I will not name now to question the third man and collect more data," said Khamis bin Mzeina, head of the investigation department at Dubai police.
Dubai media had estimated the value of the stolen diamonds at nearly $14 million, but police said it was nearly 15 million dirhams ($4.09 million).
Dubai, the Gulf's trading and tourism hub which has been undergoing extensive development, prides itself on a low crime rate that has helped attract millions of holidaymakers.
