by Michele Howe on Saturday, 08 September 2007

The 27th edition of GITEX, the region's biggest annual technology event, was inaugurated today by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance and Industry.

The opening of the five-day event was marked by a ribbon cutting ceremony, which took place just after 11am at the entrance to Zabeel Hall in the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Sheikh Hamdan cut the light blue ribbon to a round of applause before going on a tour of the exhibition.

More than 130,000 people from around the world are expected to attend the show, which features over 3,300 companies including 572 first time exhibitors.

The five-day event opens to trade visitors at 1.00pm.

Alfred Zollar, worldwide president and general manager of IBM Tivoli Software, will kick off the event with a keynote speech for senior executives titled ‘Innovation that matters'.

His address will be the first in a series of conferences lined up as part of the show's new Global Conference programme. Other speakers include Justin Doo, Trend Micro's MEA managing director, Ayman Abouseif, managing director Gulf States, Oracle and Ken Drachnik, community development and marketing manager, open source group at Sun Microsystems.

Other innovations this year include the Priority Club for senior executives, and Gadget Glam, a fashion show featuring all the latest must-have products.

"The high-calibre show enhancements introduced this year - combined with a line-up of world-class technological innovations - ensure that participants will not be disappointed as GITEX launches its most innovative and industry-focused event ever," said Helal Saeed Al Marri, director general, Dubai World Trade Centre.

Tickets cost 40 UAE dirhams for a one-day pass or for 100 dirhams for the entire week, and can be purchased at the event upon presentation of a business card.

GITEX Technology Week runs 8-12 September at Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The exhibition is held in association with GITEX Shopper, which takes place from the 6-12 September 2007 at the Airport Expo Dubai.
