The Abu Dhabi government-led Masdar Initiative has won an international sustainability award.

Masdar was named "Sustainable City of the Year" in the Euromoney and Ernst & Young Global Renewable Energy Awards 2007 at the 9th Annual Global Renewable Energy and Finance Forum (REFF) in London, UK this week.

This is the second award to be presented to Masdar in recent months; in June it was singled out for the first World Clean Energy Award by the Swiss-based Transatlantic21 Association.

Masdar CEO Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber said the award shows the centrality of the Masdar Initiative in the global renewable energy sphere.

"This is a valuable recognition of Masdar's commitment to and vision of a clean energy future for the world, and provides a significant impetus for us to move forward," commented Al Jaber.

The Masdar Initiative is driven by the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (ADFEC). It is a comprehensive government programme that was established to address the issues of sustainable energy sources and environmental practices.

REFF is Europe's largest and most established event for the renewable energy finance sector. Conference delegates include public and private investors, project developers and senior executives from the renewable energy, technology and corporate funding sectors worldwide.
