Drive for electric cars in UAE

by Safura Rahimi on Tuesday, 20 February 2007

Electric cars may soon be seen in the streets of Abu Dhabi if negotiations between investment company Mubadala and the Baynuna Group go as planned, according to a Gulf News report.

Baynuna's chairman Khalid Abdullah Al Bu Ainnain confirmed to the newspaper today that a deal signed with French company Dassault will export 10,000 advanced electric cars, which have civilian as well as military uses.

"We are cooperating with the giant French group Dassault to produce an electric car which can operate on clean power with a speed of 160 km/h," he is quoted as saying, adding that the cars' technology boasts low fuel consumption - 1.5 litres of petrol per 100 km - that "could be used as taxis, public transport vehicles and government cars."

Al Bu Ainnain, the former chief of the UAE Air Force, also told Gulf News that Abu Dhabi-based Baynuna Group will produce the engine, battery and air conditioning, and that Dassault will produce the rest of the car.

"This technology can fit with any regular car, and most of the car's systems can be converted to this electric car," he added.

Electric-powered cars are already gaining popularity in the US, where car manufacturers Ford and GM both displayed their designs at this year's Detroit Auto Show, highlighting their efforts to produce environmentally-friendly cars.
