Kerala-born Yusuffali MA is one of India’s most famous nonresident businessmen. Yusuffali is the managing director EMKE, which owns amongst its many brands the Lulu chain of hypermarkets.
The group, which is headquartered in Abu Dhabi and has offices in 29 countries, employs around 27,000 people – including 22,000 Indians – and has an annual turnover of $3.75bn.
Business duties aside, Yusuffali became was the first expatriate to be elected as a board member of the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce & Industries (ADCCI) in 2005. He has also been recognised for his achievements in his home country.
He became the recipient of the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award, the highest Indian government award given to NRIs, in 2005, and was the first NRI in the Gulf to win the Padma Shri award, in 2008.
In addition, Yussufali also works with a number of social and charitable organisations both in India and the Gulf. In 2010, he was he was appointed as an independent director of Air India.
