A 13-year-old UAE resident has been accused of breaching her friend’s privacy after she posted a picture on Facebook without her permission.

Parents of the teenager’s friend have filed a complaint with Abu Dhabi Misdemeanours Court after they saw the picture of their daughter on the social media website, according to a report on 7Days newspaper.

While prosecutors said the friend posed for the picture, which was not indecent and shows her wearing a headscarf, the mother became angry when she saw it, claiming the image posed a danger to her daughter as it could have been used to blackmail her child.

“The mother got angry and informed her husband about their daughter’s picture. When they asked their daughter, she told them that she did not know how her photo was taken and never authorised her friend to post her picture,” the prosecutor was quoted as saying.

When questioned, however, the girl who posted the picture said the friend had asked her to take the picture and post it on her page.

The court heard that the girls were classmates at an Abu Dhabi school and were close friends.

The case came to court because the friend could not prove that she had been given permission to post the picture on Facebook. The trial continues.
