Iron Man 3, the Hollywood blockbuster starring Robert Downey Jr, has smashed box office records in the UAE, raking in AED10.7m ($2.9m) in its opening weekend.
The movie, which continues of the story of the famous Marvel Comics superhero, debuted in the Gulf state on May 2, with 231,000 punters paying to see the film in its first four days of showings.
The previous UAE box office record holder was The Avengers, another superhero film which also features the Iron Man character.
In its opening weekend, that film took in AED10.6m in box office receipts.
Other major box office draws in the country over the past year or so have been: Mission Impossible 4, which took in more than $6m in the 12 months after opening; Transformers 3 at $4.19m; and Pirates of the Caribbean 4 at $3.75m.
