Kuwaiti couples now obliged to take pre-marriage check-ups

Couples in Kuwait are now being obliged to undergo a pre-marriage medical check-up.

The Ministry of Health on Sunday opened a new centre for pre-marriage medical check-ups, receiving 45 couples on its first day of opening.

On July 23 the government warned that couples failing to have medical checks before getting married face prison sentences.

Meanwhile, divorcees wishing to remarry will have to take another pre-marital test if the examination is scheduled at least six months after their previous check-up.

The MoH plans to open additional offices in all governorates in a move primarily aimed at ensuring healthy and safe marriages with a view to curbing genetic and contagious diseases, according to ministry spokesman Hilal al-Sayer.

Diseases the authorities will be looking to screen during the check-ups include anemia, hepatitis, AIDS and syphilis, he added.
