Mideast roads are second most dangerous in world

Roads in the Middle East are the second most dangerous in the world, with 18 of every 100,000 people losing their lives in crashes, a top official has said.

The region's roads ranked second globally behind Africa, according to Robert Marks, a senior official of International Safety Council, during a visit to Doha.

Marks said African roads were considered the most dangerous in the world with 24 people out of every 100,000 dying in road incidents every year.

He added that Qatar’s accident rate was not as significant as Saudi Arabia but still there was "a need to put more effort from governments and private sector to heighten awareness among motorists on defensive driving", The Peninsula reported on Tuesday.

“I take the view that one fatality is one fatality too many,” Marks told the paper.

Globally, Marks said that the majority of road accidents which should have been prevented involve young drivers licensed to drive with less than five years experience.

'Indians are worthless drivers' AB, you have no problem publishing that. But slightest hint at Emiraties being bad drivers, or lawless, or reckless, will not get published. Cause it goes against your 'guidelines' YOu are worthless journalistic RUBBISH. But hey, you already knew that, didn't you?

"You chaps have made unfair comments bordering on racism" Racist?? - Rubbish - Indians are hopeless drivers in India, the question is how are Indian drivers on Dubai roads ? :) Driving tests in India - the easiest test in the world! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGfLNqjh4j0

Some of the comments in this forum are downright funny - stuff what Roy and Sal and Henry have posted. They said that Indians get licenses without learning the rules. God...I wish that were true. We could have saved such a lot of money. However, since we do not belong to privileged nations who can get their driving licenses transferred, Indians along with a whole lot of other nationalities have to take classes (40 if you are a novice, 24 if you've driven for more than 2 years in the region) @ anything ranging from AED 60 to AED 250 per class, pass the "parking" test, pass the "signal" test, pass the assessment test and pass the driving test (of course paying fees along the way for each test) to get a license. If they fail at any juncture, then they go back for extra classes (and pay money) and do a re-test (and pay the fees). My instructor was a Pakistani and an extremely good one. On the day of the test, 2 of the 4 people who took the test in the car got through - incidentally both of us who passed went to the same instructor and were attempting the test for the first time. BTW, the final test is taken by the traffic department personnel and not Indian/Pakistani instructors. So people pass only if the TD thinks they're fit to drive. As for the driving habit of westerners (or the privileged license converters), just drive around Springs, Arabian Ranches, Greens etc and you will know. The way some of these expert drivers (especially women) negotiate a round-about would be amusing to watch if it were not so dangerous. And finally, the video of India driving.... Its a very old one and for every video posted like that, I can post a 1000 others where traffic is well-coordinated and drivers are well behaved. And in the video too...did you notice there was no accident even in all that chaos? :) You chaps have made unfair comments bordering on racism and I felt the need to put in my perspective.... if you call it a chip, so be it.

Hi Henry,You finally saw the daylight but in a different manner.UK is trying to attract the most talented ones from all over the world to pull itself out of the cesspool, catering to dole survivors and good-for-nothing blokes. The fact is that the boot is on the other foot. Many UK and US whizkids are now lining up to work in the only growing large markets like India. The trash is left behind. UK polity has a high regard for human rights,so it accepts rows of asylum seekers from overseas while it lays the red carpet for business investors and professionals....who are being fetted by a long list of countries. So, check out your own govt.stats and find out how many from this toasted community are coming to UK. I really do not know from where you are pin pointing the numbers on Indians....have you got any credible source?...from the Dubai Traffic dept?anecdotal evidence suggest otherwise. Indians have worked and lived in the most extreme conditions while the vast majority of whingers from UK are known to abhor hard work that primarily made Britain "Great".So, you can infer who the cry babies are. Unfortunately, the way these local scums treat the downtrodden South Asians immigrants from Pakistan and Bangladesh, leave a lot to be written about. No wonder, UK bright lights are fast migrating to greener pastures outside Europe with caps in their hands. I am sure once you get hit by a reality check, you will be a worrywort trying only for your basic survival rather than inventing figures to lambast an entire community for no apparent reason. Cry! the debt beast is out to get you and......ooooohhhh Mommy....Queen Victoria is DEAD and Gone!!!!

@ Shariq Lounge Lizards LOL, I like that one, thanks :) Yes the days of "the Empire" are long gone and Royal Britania no longer rules the wave (I did know that :)), God only knows why tens of thousands of foreigners still want to sneak into Britain ever year. It's NOT the land of dreams & roses! Getting back to Indian drivers, I did'nt realize that Indians had such a chip on their shoulder that they would be so sensitive of someone stating a FACT...but maybe that's just you with the chip ? Yes, Indians (as a race) are resourcesful, hard working & great cooks but they still drive like someone who has had a frontal lobotomy and an iminent death wish. Its a fact that has been well documented over the years and continues to this very day. You can deny it all you want. The point of me asking about what do the statistics say was not racist whatsover. If you have a problem you have to find out the source of the problem in order to fix it - if you don't then nothing will ever change and you will be having the same conversation years later. In UK the insurance companies charge more money to insure drivers under a certain age, purely because "statistically" they have more accidents than other groups. (not races) You have to use statistics, as a percentage of the driving population who are in the most accidents in Dubai/UAE ? Indians ?
