The new director of Al Jazeera television has topped the first ever Qatar Power List, published today by Arabian Business.

Sheikh Ahmed Bin Jassim Al Thani, who became director general last year after the sudden resignation of Wadah Khafar, took the top slot ahead of Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker.

Qatar Gas chairman Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa Al Thani was third, with Qatar Foundation vice chairman Saif Al Hajeri in fourth place. Qatar National Bank CEO Ali Shareef Al Emadi was fifth.

The list contains both expatriates and Arabs working in Qatar, and does not include any members of the royal family – unless they have a very specific role in business.

“For the past six months we have been studying closely who the real people of influence are in Qatar – not only in the business world, but in arts, culture, science and even sports. This is the first ever, and the most comprehensive guide to power and influence in Qatar,” said Arabian Business Editor Edward Attwood.

Al Jazeera has the most representatives on the list with four, including Al Anstey, managing director of Al Jazeera English (9th), Mohammed Nanabhay, editor of the Al Jazeera website (35th) and presenter Khadija Ben Ganna (42nd).

The  list contains many property and construction chiefs, plus one astronomer – Khalid Al Subai, ranked 41st. The renowned nuclear physicist Elham Al Qaradawi also makes the top fifty at 48, with rally driver Nasser Al Attiyah at 37.

Get your facts straight! Sheikh Ahmad is the director general of AJ NETWORK - not television. The director of AJ Arabic television is Dr Mostefa Souag.
