UAE airlines review cockpit policies after Germanwings crash
Trish : I believe the idea is not to have the purser/steward fly the plane, but prevent anything untoward by the pilot, such as locking the door or going into a steep dive. He would be able to alert the rest of the crew of the behaviour and stop if necessary until the other pilot comes in.
