An Asian expatriate was killed and four other people injured in an elevator accident in Muscat’s Al Khuwair coastal district, it was reported.

According to the Times of Oman, the group were in the process of transporting goods in the elevator at Safeer Ball Room near a mall in Al Khuwair when a cable broke.

"Following a cable malfunction, the elevator came crashing down all of a sudden," a source was quoted as saying.

Authorities said in an official statement on Facebook that all five were trapped in the elevator.

“One had already died and the other four had suffered minor injuries,” it said.

The General Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance said rescue personnel from Azaiba and Muscat unit rushed to the scene.

The Asian man was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. The other four, whose identities were not known, were being treated for their injuries.

The Facebook post included a warning to carry out regular maintenance checks on elevators and electrical equipment.

Safeer Ball Room has not yet commented on the incident.
