Over 300 outlets have signed up with the UAE Food Bank, which aims to optimise food usage and reduce food waste in the country.

The first branch of the UAE food bank opened at Al Quoz on Wednesday, with more such branches set to open across the UAE and neighbouring countries, according to Dubai Municipality officials, who will regulate the process of collecting, packing, storing and distributing meals for the food bank.

The municipality will also create operational guidelines that will clarify the roles of all entities including supervisors who will ensure regulations are adhered to by stakeholders who donate food, and the charitable organisations that manage distribution.

Since its foundation in January, the UAE Food Bank partnerships with 96 hotels, 240 food outlets and seven charitable organisations.

“The [Al Qouz] site is equipped with all the necessary technical and logistical amenities to provide support and sport the launch of the foodbank’s operations,” Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum, chairperson, UAE Food Bank, said in a statement.

She added: “The UAE Foodbank represents one of the most humanitarian values in the UAE, and is well on its way to becoming one of the country’s largest humanitarian institutions, widely spreading the culture of giving within a sustainable institutional framework.”

Hussain Nasser Lootah, deputy chairman, UAE Food Bank, said, the food bank will give many people and institutions the opportunity to volunteer and actively participate in the process of giving food at all stages, starting from collecting, storing, packaging and distributing.
