What do you do for mainstream acceptance once the geek-chic market is more or less saturated with your electronic gizmo?
You try colors, of course.
Taking a cue from Apple Computer (i.e., Technicolor iMacs), Palm Inc. is selling its popular Palm Pilot in new limited-edition colors for the Palm Vx and is offering interchangeable, multihued face plates for the new m100 personal digital assistant.
While not strictly targeting corporate buyers with the move, Palm is hoping color options will ease one headache for IT managers--user customisation.
"What's important to people is they want to personalize stuff, and IT managers hate that," says Tim Twerdahl, a product manager at Palm.
Custom configurations can be a pain to deal with, he says, "but this is an easy way to customize and say it's mine."
In a more practical vein, Palm also is shipping its new Palm VIIx Wireless with four times the memory of the Palm VII.
The upgrade supports POP3 and IMAP clients for E-mail, as well as Yahoo mail and Juno Mail. Palm is also giving away 400 Web-clipping applications, used to search the Internet at Palm.net.
Palm VIIx sells for $449 in the US. Middle East prices have not been announced.
