IN PICTURES: Dubai then and now

Sheikh Zayed Road, 1995

Photographer: Gulf News; observed by Asad Azizi, 29, Iranian, who has lived in Dubai all his life.

This picture was snapped from the World Trade Centre, not long after the Crowne Plaza hotel was built – when they first proposed building it, everyone thought it was a mad idea to build a hotel on Sheikh Zayed Road. You’ll also notice that there were no interchanges on the old road.”

I remember when I visited Dubai the first time in 2001 - I left the airport and saw locals with donkeys on the leash - like in old Arabia - it was amazing. I have been staying at the new Emirates Towers Hotel and looking out from my room's window - I saw - nothing but desert:-)) I visited the Dubai Racing Course and the place was mobbed with Arabs arriving on their camels from remote places. The children were after us and so kind and curious - and please note - they were able to exchange words in English! What a difference to nowadays. What a performance of this amazing city!

i remember having visited dubai in 1994 and emirates golf course and the (now shut down) hard rock cafe was considered to be on the outside of the main city....
a drive from hor al anz to jumeirah via the shindagha tunnel took 15-20 mins at 6.30 am!
would be interesting to read what the elders who came here for the first time much earlier than 1994 would have to narrate...please share your experiences...we all owe it to this fantastic city and country that has given us all so much...best wishes to everyone on the 41st national day of this great country.
