The ninth International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Regional Security Summit has taken place in the Bahraini capital, Manama. Experts and delegates from around the world attended the summit, including Omani Foreign Minister, Yussef bin Alawi, where issues including diplomacy with Iran.
Speaking at the summit, US Secretary of Defense, Chuck Hagel, said diplomacy with Iran must be backed up by US military might, alleviating fears of Gulf allies anxious over a nuclear deal with Tehran. Hagel promised the United States would maintain a 35,000-strong force in the Gulf region, as well as an armada of ships and warplanes, despite the recent deal with Tehran.
Saudi Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Nizar bin Obaid Madani also spoke during the Security Summit, which was attended by both regional and global delegates.
Qatari Foreign Minister Khalid Al Attiyah addressed allies at the summit.
Omani Foreign Minister Yussef bin Alawi bin Abdullah (L) and Kuwaiti Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed Sabah Al Salem Al Sabah, share an aside at the summit.
Iraqi Minister of Foreign Affairs Hoshyar Zebari was also in attendance.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy spoke at the summit.
