Qatar has called for promoting a joint Arab legal and judicial system in a bid to improve citizens rights, the Qatar News Agency reported.
Addressing a meeting of Arab attorneys in Cairo, Qatar’s attorney general Dr Ali Bin Futais Al Merri said recent changes in the region and had led to “the deprivation of rights and usurpation of peoples’ wealth”.
He proposed giving the Arab League secretary general the power to set up a commission that prepares an Arab plan for the independence of the judicial system, which he said should be presented to the ministerial council of the Arab League and later to the Arab summit conference for approval.
Al Merri also called for independence for the general prosecution, even though this was previously rejected by Arab justice ministers.
He urged the ministerial council of the Arab League to set up an independent secretariat for the general attorneys that will help the attorneys present their recommendations independent from any political interference.
