‘Coming Up Roses’ by Jean Patou Paris the Ultimate Fragrance to celebrate P&G Prestige Products’ 15t
Press Release Content
P&G Prestige Products celebrates its 15th Anniversary with an exclusive, non-commercial fragrance - a gift to friends and supporters over the years.
Created by Jean-Michel Duriez, in-house perfumer for Jean Patou Paris, who was the nose responsible for a host of memorable fragrances including Lacoste for Women, Yohji Homme and, more recently, Enjoy for Jean Patou, Jean-Michel admits that creating a fragrance to commemorate an anniversary was a tough challenge.
Indeed, trying to capture a sense of the past while striving to produce something timeless that also has a contemporary resonance is an almost impossible brief for a perfumer to follow. "But", Jean-Michel Duriez comments, "it's such an honour to be asked, that of course the challenge becomes a thrill!"
Knowing that "Coming Up Roses" was the chosen name, the aim was to create a fresh, modern fragrance, totally in the spirit of P&G Prestige Products. A Bulgarian rose was chosen for its robust quality and, being less fragile than some other roses, it can be extracted by vapour distillation, a process that produces a fresh top note.
With the key note in place, the next step was to carefully select some fresh and modern ingredients that would give the fragrance its contemporary, luxurious credentials. Ambrette oil, from the seed pod of the Asian plant, used as a natural substitute for musk, was the first choice to bolster the velvety rose tones. Then, pear to add sweetness. Next, pure white flowers providing a freshness and transparency.
It was decided that lily, with its hedione molecule which is like the sharp clean scent of jasmine, was perfect. Then finally to ‘fix' the fragrance - stretching the experience of the top and heart notes - the woody/ambery tones of white musk were used, not as an accord but to anchor the other ingredients to make them last longer.
With "Coming Up Roses", the excitement P&G Prestige Products is that there's a connection with the past and the future in terms of the evolution of perfumery and the evolution of P&G Prestige Products which makes it so right for an anniversary fragrance.
As Jean-Michel Duriez comments: "I think of P&G Prestige Products as the rose and the fragrance ‘Coming Up Roses' as the dew on the petals." And what better anniversary gift than the most timeless flower in the world distilled in a beautiful fragrance.
