New software brings PC-strength protection to smartphones.

Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced the launch of Norton Smartphone Security, the first consumer mobile security offering to provide a solution for both Windows Mobile and Symbian OSTM  in one product.  As well as featuring best-in-class Norton AntiVirus technology, the new product includes a firewall and antispam for SMS (Short Message Service), providing mobile users the same level of security that has become standard for laptops and other computing devices.

As mobile phones increase in capabilities, consumers are using them for a wide variety of activities including monetary transactions and regular web browsing. Analyst firm Gartner estimates that by 2008, sales of smartphones will overtake laptops in volume on a worldwide basis*.  This leaves consumers open to many more potential threats from cyber criminals and web and e-mail viruses.

Norton Smartphone Security gives consumers the tools to safeguard against the latest mobile threats and confidence to communicate safely while on the move.  In addition to blocking SMS and MMS texts from unknown senders, Norton Smartphone Security also prevents intruders from entering and exporting data from the mobile phone.

Con Mallon, Director of Product Marketing EMEA, Symantec said, "Smartphones are allowing consumers the freedom to communicate and access important information anytime, anywhere, making them more attractive than ever. However, with a rising number of users comes an increase in potential threats from cyber criminals. An unsecure public WiFi or network connection can put users at risk.

Web and e-mail viruses can directly infect smartphones, enabling hackers to remotely control the device, access sensitive information or disable applications.  Norton Smartphone Security runs discreetly in the background, so mobile users can engage in everyday activities like e-mailing, Web browsing or banking online with confidence and peace of mind."

Key product features include

• AntiVirus - Protects users from viruses by detecting mobile threats and preventing users from accessing infected files.

• AntiSpam for SMS - Automatically deletes spam messages, or filters them to a separate spam folder.

• Firewall - Controls both inbound and outbound network traffic on the mobile device.
