'Radical transformation' for Abu Dhabi
A ‘radical transformation’ of the structure of the government and economy of Abu Dhabi is under way, according to the secretary general of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, WAM reports.
The council intends to revolutionise the way in which Abu Dhabi operates, Mohammed Ahmed Al Bowardi says in the latest issue of Capital Letter, the quarterly magazine of the British Business Group in Dubai.
The Government restructure has two basic objectives, he says. “One is to ensure that Government focuses on its core responsibilities, and divests itself of aspects which are better handled by the private sector.” Privatisation of the water and electricity sector, followed by that of waste collection and disposal services are two examples.
Secondly he says, citing reforms in the health and police services, is to ensure Government machinery is “revised and updated to ensure that it can deliver to the population of the Emirate high quality services, compatible with international standards, yet at a reasonable cost.”
With a broader framework, the focus is on further economic diversification, he says. Oil and gas will continue to underpin the economy, with new developments in the sector to ensure its future success, including the expansion of capacity from existing fields and the development of new reserves.
However, the challenge of declining reserves and productions must be addressed, he says, citing the Masdar Initiative through which Abu Dhabi is positioning itself “as a world-class research and development hub for new energy technologies.”
Al Bowardi said enormous new opportunities for growth exist through initiatives such as the expansion of Abu Dhabi International Airport, the creation of Etihad Airlines, and the development of tourism.
