Burj Dubai will rise to 166 storeys

by Ben Flanagan

The Burj Dubai, which is on track to be the tallest building in the world, is to be 166 storeys high and topped with a 30-metre tall spire, a senior consultant has revealed to ArabianBusiness.com.

Until now, the number of floors at Dubai’s flagship tower – which is still under construction – has been a closely guarded secret. The exact height in metres is yet to be disclosed.
But based on its current height of 347.3 metres at 100 storeys, the Burj Dubai would stand at 606.5 metres upon completion, including the spire. However, that height assumes that all floors are of equal height.

All Emaar has said officially about the completed tower is that it will be over 700 metres in height, and have more than 160 floors. A spokesperson refused to comment further on the exact height.

But even at 606.5 metres, the Burj Dubai would tower above the Taipei 101 building in Taiwan - currently the world's highest building - by almost 100 metres. And it would stand 56 floors taller than the Sears Tower in Chicago, the current record-holder on the number of storeys.

Burj Dubai is part of the AED 73 billion (US$20 billion) Downtown Burj Dubai mixed-use project, which will include residences, commercial spaces, and an Armani-branded hotel.

ArabianBusiness.com has also learnt that Emaar is in talks to develop more Armani-branded hotels. The Burj Dubai is thought to be just one of fifty such developments under discussion worldwide.
