New course launched to take staff up ladder

The Manchester Business School in Dubai has launched an MBA course for Construction Executives.

The programme is designed to provide executives with the skills necessary for senior management.
"The programme very much focuses on aspects of project management," said Professor Graham Winch, director of the MBA for Construction Executives, Manchester Business School. "It looks at strategic project management, procurement and collaborative working. There's also a module that focuses on constructional terms."

Winch added that the university spoke to a number of construction companies and developers in the UAE, including Nakheel, while devising the MBA's curriculum.

"We spoke to various employers about their requirements. There seems to be a lot of awareness that the construction sector needs to up its game, and not just in Dubai.

"I think a company that offers support to its employees to take on such an MBA would certainly be very important in the retention of staff. It could also attract them too."

The programme is studied through distant learning, which means students would still spend most of their time in the workplace.

"The programme will not only allow staff to develop, but will give them time to think reflectively by having time out of the day job. They'll also be able to communicate with others about similar situations, and will feed that back into the day job."
