Bilfinger wins Barwa in Qatar

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer

Bilfinger Berger has won a US $1.3 billion (QR4.8 billion) contract to build the first phase of Barwa City in Qatar.

The turnkey package includes the construction of 128 low-rise residential buildings with a gross floor area of 850,000m2 and related infrastructure.
The client is Barwa Real Estate Company.

Mahmoud El Khafif, regional manager - Gulf States, Bilfinger Berger AG Civil, confirmed that the contract was signed last week.

Construction is due to start this month and is expected to be completed in 36 months.

Located on the outskirts of Doha, Barwa City will be home to more than 25,000 people in more than 6,000 units by 2010.

Population growth in Qatar has lead to the current shortage in housing supply, which has caused rents to spiral.
