Dubai ups the fight against fraud

by Safura Rahimi

Dubai Customs has organised a workshop to raise awareness on the dangers of fake goods, stressing the role of the UAE in fighting fraud on local and regional levels.

The workshop, entitled "The Role of Customs in Fighting Business Fraud and Counterfeiting", is coordinated in part with the Ministry of Economy.
The director general of the Federal Customs Authority, Mr. Mohammed bin Fahd Al Muhairi, called on the region to cooperate to curb the incidence of business fraud and counterfeiting, stating that they affect economic prosperity.

"Government measures must accompany raising the awareness among traders and consumers to arrive to a community free from business fraud," he said.

Mr. Muhairi stressed the importance of the UAE's collaborations with neighboring nations and its adherence to the World Trade Organisation in fighting fraud.

He also highlighted the UAE's signing of deals to facilitate trades between Arab countries and its membership in the Federal Customs Authority of the GCC states.

The director general underlined Dubai Customs' role in controlling the borders and preventing the entry of goods that do not match the rules and standards of the UAE.

According to Abdullah Al Hussein, director of the Monitoring Department at the Ministry of Economy, the UAE is keen on curbing business fraud and counterfeiting by channeling its efforts to preserving the economy and consumers from ‘the dangers of these goods'.

It is also thought that the issue of counterfeit goods may have been an obstacle - albeit a minor one - in the proposed free trade agreement (FTA) between the UAE and United States.
