Maersk pay tribute to UAE shipping industry
Global shipping giants Maersk Line hosted regional dignitaries, professionals and senior management from the government, industrial, trading and shipping industries from within the UAE last month. The evening began with a tribute to key customers for their role in the massive growth the firm has witnessed in the Middle East container shipping market.
The evening's keynote speech was given by DP World chairman Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, who thanked Maersk for its contribution in the success of Dubai and the ongoing success of Jebel Ali.
Speaking at the gala ceremony, held at the Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai, Marc Gijsbrechts, CEO Maersk Middle East Area thanked the regional clients for their role and the continued support they had shown over the past ten years. "Impressive growth has marked the operations of Maersk Line with turnover jumping from US$4 billion in 1995 to $19 billion in 2006. The Middle Eastern market has witnessed particularly outstanding growth and now represents 10% of volumes handled by Maersk Line globally," said Gijsbrechts.
The CEO went on to predict that in the near future a more balanced import and export market can be expected in the Middle East, which has primarily been an import driven surplus market.
"In 2007, the Middle East is expected to grow faster than any other market in the entire Maersk network. Maersk Middle East is targeting further growth in coming years and aims to become a one million forty-foot equivalent area by 2009 - if these targets are achieved, Maersk Middle East alone will handle the same volume that Maersk Line handled globally 10 years ago," revealed Gijsbrechts.
Dubai Aluminium Company were awarded Top Shipper for Maersk Line, while Direct Shipping Service and Jelem Shipping Service were awarded Top Forwarder and Top Importer respectively.
