by Lynne Roberts

The first private power plant in Bahrain was unveiled yesterday by Crown Prince and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Force Shaikh Salman Bin Hamad Al Khalifa.

Gulf News reported that the $500 million plant was completed on time in under 30 months. The first phase of the project completed in April 2006, with 470 mega-watts of generating capacity made available to the Bahrain national grid during last summer. A further 480mw is now available, bringing total capacity to 950mw.
Owned by Al Ezzel Power Company, the plant was co-developed by Gulf Investment Corporation and Suez Energy International and will help meet a growing need for electricty resulting from Bahrain’s rapidly growing economy. The plant is fired with natural gas supplied by the Bahrain Petroleum Company.
