HBG beats off Balfour for Sheffield shop job

HBG has made it through to the second stage of a two-stage tender for a US $88.9 million (£45 million) deal to revamp a shopping centre in Sheffield, according to a report in Construction News.

The company has beaten rival Balfour Beatty to the post and looks set to secure the contract for Deutsche Bank's development arm, RReef.
Designed by Broadway Maylan, an official contract award on the new scheme is not expected until July. The scheme marks a massive regeneration of the city, which is set to see an investment of more than $1.9billion during the next 10 years.

Set to focus on redeveloping the rundown Moor shopping area, the site is currently one of the main retail areas in the city centre. The first part will focus on constructing an indoor market, along with retail units and residential space. Featuring around 250 stalls, the market will replace the city's existing Castlegate markets. The first stage will also feature shop units, a large car park development and a purpose-built student accommodation block for Sheffield Hallam University.

Planning permission was approved by Sheffield City Council in January and work on phase one will start in August. The whole scheme, which comprises a dozen separate retail and residential areas, is expected to take 10 years to complete.
