Planning guide launched

Al Habtoor Engineering Enterprises (HEE) has launched the HEE MEP Planning Manual, a document aimed at the UAE's mechanical, electrical and plumbing sector. The firm plans to apply the document as guidance to those delivering MEP services to all its future projects.

The manual provides flow diagrams of the MEP activities involved in the construction of a building and shows how these interlink with other activities such as the civil works. The aim is to simplify the co-ordination of works on site and establish uniform standards in the areas of planning and scheduling for MEP works in a typical building construction.
The firm held an open industry workshop in Dubai to introduce the manual, with an aim to collect, debate and review ideas for the further development of the document. MEP service providers, stakeholders and experts convened to share knowledge, expertise and provide input to be incorporated into the manual.

"Nearly 30% of the construction costs of a project are MEP related so it poses a significant risk," stated Al Habtoor planning manager Jafar Mustafa Khair. "The main issues are to emphasise quality engineering on the MEP installations, produce a philosophy of proper MEP in planning and programming and invest in the MEP sector. We hope in the [initial] manual we have at least 50% of the story, but we need engineers' input."

The HEE MEP Planning Manual will be available free of charge to those in the construction sector.
